Merry Christmas Mr. Lawrence (1983)

”Merry Christmas Mr. Lawrence” can be brutal and blunt, not just in its scenes of hara-kiri (there are several of these) but in its occasionally stilted execution. The screenplay, by Mr. Oshima and Paul Mayersberg, has a curiously dislocated quality.

To be honest MERRY CHRISTMAS MR LAWRENCE is a complete mess . Director Nagisa Oshima has made a sort of art house BRIDGE ON THE RIVER KWAI , the music is intrusive and the story is unfocussed . As some people have said what is the story ? and I am something at a loss thinking what is the story.

critics consensus. Worthy themes and strong performances across the board make Merry Christmas, Mr. Lawrence an impactful story about bridging cultural divides. Read critic reviews.

Here’s a movie that is even stranger than it was intended to be. “Merry Christmas, Mr. Lawrence” is about a clash between two cultures (British and Japanese) and two styles of military service (patriotic and pragmatic). That would be enough for any movie, and there are scenes when it is enough, and the movie works pretty well.

Nagisa Oshima’s Merry Christmas Mr. Lawrence is presented in the aspect ratio of 1.78:1 on this dual-layer Blu-ray disc. The transfer is presented in 1080p/24hz. It isn’t a “pretty” film, so to say, but Criterion’s transfer still manages to present a rather striking picture. Colours are limited primarily to browns, grays, and greens.

Merry Christmas, Mr. Lawrence’ review by Gavin

A prisoner-of-war drama as fever dream, Merry Christmas Mr. Lawrence fascinates mostly for the hit-and-miss alchemy of its discordant elements: in performance, pop-star charisma versus British actorliness; in narrative style, genre expectations coming up against modernist psychosexual undercurrents. ‘Merry Christmas Mr. Lawrence’ is very engaging in that it confounds the expectations derived from its war setting by delivering a meditation on cultural differences.

Merry Christmas Mr. Lawrence is one of those films whose title is drawn from a line of its dialogue (this is not uncommon – these films even have their own IMDb category), and while I’m not about to reveal where and in what context this particular line is delivered, just know that every time I watch the film and these words are spoken, I end up with tears waterfalling down my face.

Review In A Nutshell: Merry Christmas Mr. Lawrence is a powerful film that speaks about the difference in values between two different cultures. This film doesn’t just explore the two cultures that are seen on screen, it represents humanity in general, showing us how malevolent humans could become towards the people that don’t share the same values.

Merry Christmas, Mr. Lawrence By no means an easy picture to deal with, this thinking man’s version of The Bridge on the River Kwai makes no concessions to.

Merry Christmas Mr. Lawrence (1983) on IMDb: Movies, TV, Celebs, and more.

It’s been said Merry Christmas Mr. Lawrence is at times erotic but I don’t really see it. There is an underlying homoerotic nuance throughout, but it isn’t the purpose of this film, even though there’s basically no female participation in the story. I do find it regrettable that many Gays were so brutally chastised during wartime. Not necessary.
