5 Differences Between Using a VPN and Using Incognito or Private Browsing Mode

👨‍💻

Some people think that they do not need to use any VPN if the goal is to gain privacy in their browsing session. There is a feature offered on every browser that allows them to hide their browsing activity in their desktop or mobile devices. This feature is called incognito or private browsing. When you use this feature, you will be able to browse privately without leaving any history in your browser. But, is it enough to maintain your privacy during your browsing activity?

The answer may surprise you. If you think that using incognito mode is the same as using a VPN, and if you think that it provides enough privacy for your browsing activity, you are wrong. VPN offers more security and privacy features when compared to incognito or private browsing mode. In fact, incognito mode in your browser only offers a fraction of the features that a private network can offer you. Here are 5 differences between using a VPN and using incognito or private browsing:

1. Scope of privacy features

While both VPN and Incognito mode provide privacy features to their users, the range of privacy features in each one is different. The private network provides privacy features to users in every browsing session they have. When connected to the VPN, the connection itself is encrypted so that no third party can monitor their browsing activity. This includes the government, companies, hackers and the ISP. On the other hand, incognito mode only provides privacy to users when they are using private browsing mode, and it can only hide browsing activity of users. It does not encrypt the user’s connection and the government or ISP can still track their browsing activity.

2. System-wide privacy vs. privacy. Privacy for local browser only

With a VPN, users can enjoy system-wide security and privacy in their online activity, meaning that the entire device is encrypted, not just the browser. Whatever data transmission the users will do with their device, it will be completely hidden from third parties. This is different from Private Browsing mode, which only provides online privacy on that specific browser, and in that specific browsing session. Mostly it just hides your browsing history, and you don’t encrypt any data transmission you do while in incognito mode. Privacy here just means that your browsing history while in private browsing mode cannot be retrieved by anyone using the same browser on the same device as you.

3. Who can see your data

A private network connection allows you to hide your data transmission as long as you activate your private connection during your browsing activity. Thus, your data cannot be seen by anyone, as it will be encrypted during transmission. The government, ISP, or hackers can’t know what kind of data you’re transmitting, what password you’re typing, and what websites you’re visiting. On the other hand, Incognito mode just hides your browsing data from anyone who uses the same computer as you. It does not hide your data from the government or your ISP. Even if hackers try to hack your data transmission, they can do so, since your connection is not encrypted.

4. The main function of VPN vs. private browsing

The main function of a VPN is to provide complete freedom of the internet to its users, while maintaining their security and privacy during their browsing activity. In other words, with a VPN, you are free to visit any websites while remaining anonymous while you browse, even though the websites are blocked by your country’s government. On the other hand, Private Browsing mode has the main function of hiding your browsing data in that browsing session from other people using the same device as you, but it cannot be used to bypass government restrictions on your browsing. Thus, you cannot visit any blocked websites using incognito mode.

5. Private Communication vs. regular contact

A VPN service will protect your online privacy and security at the connection level, which means that it encrypts your normal internet connection with its own servers. With this feature, you are browsing the internet as if you were accessing websites from another website that depends on the server you are using. Whenever you activate this private connection, any online activity you do on your device will be fully protected. Incognito mode, on the other hand, will use your normal connection without encrypting the connection, as the privacy feature is only applied at the browser level. Thus, any online activity that you do outside of incognito mode is not protected.

Some Effective and Useful VPN Services

Although there are many solutions available to protect privacy, a VPN does it the right way by masking your browsing patterns. We have reviewed many products on this site but here are a few of them which clearly stand out from the crowd.

Well, in conclusion, these are the five differences between using a VPN and using incognito or private browsing. Therefore, a private network connection offers a wide range of features compared to the private browsing mode, which is why you should consider using a VPN in order to enhance the security and privacy of your online activity. If you want complete internet freedom, using a private network connection is the way to go.
