AnyConnect VPN for Windows 7

Composition

Follow the steps below to install the Cisco AnyConnect client on your computer.

Noticeable: Installation requires local administrative access to your computer.

  1. Select AnyConnect VPN Client for Windows from the Downloads and Guides page.
  2. Enter your Internet ID and password.
  3. click save the file
  4. click OK to install the file.
  5. Select the “Local Administrator” option and enter your password.
  6. Download and run AnyConnect Secure Mobility Client Installer.
  7. Double-click the setup executable file and run it.
  8. Follow the installer’s instructions
    • When you run the executable under Windows 8, Windows SmartScreen will prevent you from running an unsigned application.
    • You will see an error message that “Running this application may put your computer at risk”
    • click More information
    • click run anyway
  9. Once the client has been successfully downloaded, verify that you can connect to the VPN.
    • If you are unable to connect to a VPN, make sure you have an active network connection.
    • You may need to change the MTU (Maximum Transmission Unit) setting. to do this
      1. Click on start menu
      2. Click All programs
      3. Click Supplements.
      4. Right click Command Prompt
      5. Choose Run as administrator
      6. Enter the following command at the command prompt: Show netsh ipv4 interface sub-interface
        • This will show the current settings.
        • The MTU should be set to 1500. If not, then type the command: netsh ipv4 interface set subinterface “local connection” mtu = store 1500 = persistent
          • The name of the interface may be different, but this is the most common configuration.
        • If the client is using a WiFi connection, type: netsh ipv4 interface set subinterface Wireless Network Connection mtu = 1500 store = persistent
    • Try to connect to the VPN again. If 1500 does not work, change the MTU setting to 1402 (1374 + 28).

Connecting

  1. From the Start menu, select Cisco AnyConnect Secure Mobility Client.
    You may need to open the menu folders: Go to All Programs > Cisco > Cisco AnyConnect Security Mobility Client > Cisco AnyConnect Security Mobility Client.
  2. You must have a profile embedded with a file call The box that lists 3 options UMN – Split Tunnel – Public access to VPN poolAnd AnyConnect-UofMvpnFull, And county pools.
    • Choose ‘UMN – Split Tunnel – Public access to VPN poolFor most generalized UofM remote access needs.
    • Choose ‘AnyConnect-UofMvpnFullFor special needs that require an outbound UofM IP address such as firewall access controls or office journal access.
    • Choose county pools If your department requires it.
      • You will then select the group that corresponds to your section in the dropdown list of all VPN workgroups.
      • Noticeable: If you connect by IP address, you will see a “Certificate Mismatch” warning. Select “Accept” to continue.
  3. click Connection.
  4. Enter your UMN Internet ID and password.
  5. Choose Connection
    • It should mention the dialog at the bottom of the UI window Create VPN – Activate VPN Adapter Then it disappears after about 3-5 seconds.
    • The VPN icon should appear in the taskbar at the bottom of the screen.
    • You can move your mouse over the VPN icon to show the status of the VPN adapter.

Disconnect

From the taskbar at the bottom of the screen, click the VPN icon to display the Cisco AnyConnect user interface. The VPN icon is a white globe with green/blue links and an overlayed lock.
