Bug info

Defect ID Address
CSCvq59308 MAC 10.15: Hostscan 4.8 failed with error “Failed to evaluate situation”
CSCvq11813 32-bit host scan is causing the error “This app is not optimized for your Mac” with anyconnect 4.7

Description of the problem

How to Download Cisco Anyconnect Secure Mobility Client on Mac

When used with macOS Catalina 10.15.x, VPN connections will not be established with some versions of Cisco AnyConnect Secure Mobility Client and some versions of the HostScan package.

background

HostScan provides the AnyConnect client with the ability to identify the operating system, antivirus, antispyware, and firewall software installed on the host.

In macOS Catalina 10.15.x and later, the operating system will not support the implementation of 32-bit binaries included with HostScan 4.3.x packages and earlier. As a result, end users of AnyConnect Client attempting to connect from macOS Catalina to a Cisco Adaptive Security Appliance (ASA) device running the HostScan 4.3.x package and earlier will not be able to successfully establish VPN connections. Cisco AnyConnect 4.8.00175 is the first version that officially supports running on macOS Catalina and does not contain 32-bit code.

Symptoms of the problem

If the machine running macOS Catalina tries to connect to the main ASA machine that is running the HostScan 4.3.x package and earlier, this warning popup will show “Failed to evaluate situation: Hostscan CSD pre-validation failed”:

In addition, during the first launch of the AnyConnect HostScan, SystemScan, and DART modules on macOS Catalina 10.15.x, one-time file access request may pop up. For more information, see the AnyConnect Client 4.8 release notes.

solution / solution

Solve

In order for macOS Catalina 10.15.x users to be able to successfully establish VPN connections using AnyConnect Client with HostScan, these three steps must be performed:

  1. The HostScan package on the ASA head-end must be migrated to HostScan 4.8.00175 or later.
  2. If you migrated from HostScan 4.3.x to 4.8.00175 or later, the Dynamic Access Policy (DAP) policies must be updated to the new DAP policy definitions introduced in 4.6.x. For additional information, see 4.3.x from AnyConnect HostScan Migration 4.3.x to 4.6.x and the document later.
  3. AnyConnect Client must be upgraded to version 4.8.x or later.

The solution

If upgrading to the HostScan 4.8.00175 package or later is not an option, then system administrators with the HostScan 4.3.x package and earlier can disable HostScan on their ASA interface to restore the VPN connection. If it is disabled, not all HostScan mode functionality and Dynamic Access Policies (DAPs) that depend on endpoint information will be available.
