Configuring Point to Point Tunneling Protocol (PPTP) Server on RV320 and RV325 VPN Router Series on Windows

I’m looking to bypass the restrictions imposed by the Cisco VPN client (no local LAN access) in Windows. I don’t think I can connect to VPN using PPTP, I think it should be IPSec like using Cisco client. I’m just wondering what is involved in imitating a Cisco client (decrypting the group password, etc.) from someone who knows how to do it. Click on network card, you will see SaturnVPN connection. Right-click on the “SaturnVPN” connection (the VPN connection just created) and select “Properties”. When the ownership window opens, click on the “Security” tab. Change the “VPN Type” to “Point to Point Tunneling Protocol (PPTP)”. Choose Start network settings and dial-up connections Create a new connection. After the Network Connection Wizard window appears, choose the type of network connection and connect to a private network over the Internet. Choose to request this initial connection automatically. Specify the destination address in the Host or IP address field and click Next. According to the instructions provided, you should use SSTP or Cisco AnyConnect. For SSTP, MSCAPv2, BSD, Deflate, and TCP header compression should be used.

We should note that configuring your router to support Point-to-Point Tunnel Protocol VPN (PPTP) is an alternative method and is covered in our Cisco PPTP Router Configuration article, but PPTP VPN is an older, less secure, and less flexible solution. We highly recommend Cisco IPSec VPN only.

Point-to-Point Tunneling Protocol (PPTP) is a network protocol used to create VPN tunnels between public networks. PPTP servers are also known as Virtual Dial-Up Networking (VPDN) servers. PPTP is preferred over other VPN protocols because it is faster and has the ability to work on mobile devices. A total of ten PPTP tunnels can be configured on the PPTP server.

This article explains how to configure a PPTP (Point-to-Point Tunneling Protocol) server on Windows for the RV32x VPN router chain.

The first step. Log in to the Web Configuration Utility and select VPN > PPTP Server. the PPTP Server The page opens:

Step 2. Check maybe Check box to enable PPTP server on RV320.

Step 3. Enter the starting LAN IP address of the domain assigned to the first PPTP VPN client in start of run field. The default IP address is 192.168.1.200.

Step 4. Enter the last LAN IP address of the domain assigned to the last PPTP VPN client in end of range field. The default is 192.168.1.204.

Step 5. Click Memorizes to save the settings.

PPTP Tunnel Status

• Tunnel(s) in Use – Represents the number of tunnels currently used by the PPTP server.

• Tunnel (tunnel) available – represents the number of tunnels that are still available for the PPTP server configuration.

Noticeable: You need to add users before you can set up a connection in the connection table. For more information on how to configure users, see the article Configure User and Domain Management on the RV320 Series and RV325 VPN Router.

• Connection Table – The connection list is a read-only list that displays the information of VPN clients. The list displays the PPTP VPN client username, the remote WAN IP address of the PPTP VPN client, and the PPTP IP address that the PPTP server assigns to the client when connecting. You need to configure a PPTP VPN connection on Windows to display the user in the connection table.

Configure a PPTP VPN Connection on Windows

Step 1. Log in to the computer and choose Start > Control Panel > Network and Internet > Network and Sharing Center. the Network and Sharing Center The window appears.

Step 2. Click Create a new network or connection To create a new connection or network. the Set up a connection or network The window appears.

Step 3. Click Contact the workplace To call from the workplace.

Step 4. Click next one to complete. the Contact the workplace window appears:

Step 5. Click Using my internet connection (VPN) To use your internet connection.

Step 6. Click I will set up an internet connection later To configure the Internet connection later.

Step 7. Enter the LAN IP address of the RV320 into the file Internet address field.

Step 8. Enter a name for the destination in the file destination name field.

Step 9. Click Creates.

Noticeable: If you are using Windows 8, the following procedure will apply. If you are using Windows 7, the following three images are different, but the procedure is the same.

Step 10. Click on the network icon in the taskbar. This shows all the network, wireless, VPN and dial-up available to connect to the computer:

Step 11. Click Connection To connect the specified connection.

Noticeable: You must configure the user in a file User Management page. To learn more about how to configure user management, see the article Configure User and Domain Manager on the RV320 router. For step 12 and step 13, you must provide the same username and password that you provided in a file User management page.

Step 12. Enter the username in the file user name field.

Step 13. Enter the password in the file password field.

Step 14. Click OK.

Step 15. Right-click on the network icon in the taskbar and click Open Network and Sharing Center.

Step 16. Click on the selected VPN connection. the condition window appears:

Step 17. Click Properties. the VPN destination properties window appears:

Step 18. Choose File protection tab at the top of the window.

Step 19. Choose Point-to-Point Tunneling Protocol (PPTP) From the Type of VPN dropdown menu.

Step 20. Click OK to save the settings. Adds the new contact in .’s contact lists PPTP Server page.

Set up PPTP over VPN connection for VPN client access on RV220W from MAC

This document explains the procedure for using the default VPN client for MAC to set up a PPTP connection through a VPN tunnel to access the VPN client. Suppose if two sites, site A and site B, both have a VPN tunnel created between them. They both use the same RV220W machine. The client user credentials are set with the username and password on site B. The document then explains the procedure for accessing site B from site A through the tunnel in the MAC environment.

The VPN user for PPTP is already set up on the remote site. The username that is running test123 and the password under test is 123123.

Create a VPN connection

Step 1. Click + Sign up to create a new connection.

Step 2. Choose VPN From the Interface dropdown menu where the connection to set is VPN.

Step 3. Choose PPTP From the VPN type dropdown menu; Because PPTP is the type of VPN connection to be set.

Step 4. Enter any contact name in the Service name field. In the example the name of the test is entered.

Step 5. Click Creates To establish a VPN connection.

VPN connection configuration

Step 1. Click on ping created from the displayed connections to configure the settings.

Step 2. The configuration drop-down menu provides information about any previous configuration settings saved for any connection. If it is required to save configuration settings for the connection, choose add config An option from the configuration drop-down menu. In this case, it is not necessary to save the configuration settings and thus save a file shortening The option has been selected.

Step 3. Enter the server’s IP address in the Server address field. The server address is the remote LAN IP address of the device at the tunnel endpoint. Here in this case, the local area network IP address is 192.168.10.1 and the remote local area network address is 192.168.1.1.

Step 4. Enter the appropriate account username in the Account name field. Here the account name is the username (test123).

Step 5. Click Authentication settings. A dialog box appears allowing the user to enter a password.

Step 6. Click password Radio button where user authentication method is set as password. Then enter the password in the corresponding field. In this example, the password is test123123. This password is for the user of the account.

• RSA SecurID – A mobile device sometimes given to users generates a numeric value. If the authentication mechanism is set by the server with this numeric value, then this option is used.
• Certificate – Sometimes the server issues certificates of authenticity to the user. If the user downloads the existing certificate, it can be uploaded for authentication. tap on Choose Button to choose the appropriate certificate downloaded.
• Kerberos – Kerberos is a security protocol used for user authentication. The user sends the account username entered to the server. The server authenticates the user and sends the user a session key and a ticket that basically contains information about the user ID, the user’s network address, and the session validity period.
• CryptoCard – The CryptoCard method will notify the user of a password from the server each time the user logs into the server.

Step 7. Click OK.

Step 8. To make sure all traffic is sent through the VPN, tap advanced.

Step 9. Check Send all traffic via VPN check box. This will enable all packets to pass through the VPN connection.

Step 10. Click OK.

Step 11. Click Progressing A button to apply the configurations made to the connection.

Step 12. Click Connection To call.
