Choose the client software

OpenVPN is not a built-in Android protocol for Android devices. Therefore, a client software is required that can handle capturing the traffic you wish to send through the OpenVPN tunnel, encrypting it and passing it to the OpenVPN server. And, of course, the opposite, to decode the return traffic. So a client software is required, and there are a few options here. We do not intend to restrict our customers and cause some kind of seller lock situation. We try to keep the connection and client software selection open, although of course we recommend the official OpenVPN Connect client.

The official OpenVPN Connect app

On the Google Play Store, it is called a client that you can download and install for free OpenVPN Connect. This software supports only one active VPN tunnel at a time. Trying to connect to two different servers at the same time is a functionality we haven’t built into the official OpenVPN Connect app, nor is it possible because the underlying OS doesn’t allow it. OpenVPN Connect can remember several different servers, but only one server can be activated at a time.

To get the OpenVPN Connect app, go to the Google Play Store on your Android device, or open the link below to access the Google Play Store. In the Google Play Store on your device, search for the words “openvpn connect” and the app will appear in the search results. You can install it from there. Once installed, an icon will be placed on your home screen where you can find the app. Once you open it you can use the file access server Option to start the import process. You can use the import option directly from the web interface of the Access server or use the import option from a file. If you use the Import web interface option, you need to enter the address of the Access Server web interface here, along with your username and password. If your server is on an unusual port (not the default HTTPS TCP 443 port), specify the port here. Once the import is complete, you are ready to use the application.

OpenVPN is an open source OpenVPN app for Android

OpenVPN for Android is an open source client developed by Arne Schwabe. It is aimed at more advanced users and offers many settings, the ability to import profiles from files and to configure / change profiles within the application. The client is based on the community version of OpenVPN. It is based on OpenVPN 2.x source code. This client can be considered the semi-official client of the open source OpenVPN community.

other clients

There may be other OpenVPN clients available on the Google Play Store as well, but we don’t have information about them here.
