How to bypass UK ISP block and access ProtonVPN

-🖥️-

In 2017, the UK passed the Digital Economy Act that requires Internet Service Providers (ISPs) to block adult websites unless they receive confirmation that the user is over 18. The regulatory body that governs the ban, the BBFC, has stated that VPN services should not be affected by this ban.

Unfortunately, there have been excessive bans or widespread bans of sites that are not intended to be covered by the DEA. This block included the ProtonVPN website. According to block.org.uk, we are currently blocked by six UK ISPs:

  • Which
  • O2
  • sky
  • TalkTalk
  • Virgin Media
  • Vodafone

We are currently working with these ISPs to rectify the situation. Fortunately, if you use one of these ISPs, there are steps you can take to access https://www.protonvpn.com in the meantime. Generally, you have to sign in to your ISP account and turn off the age restriction option, but the steps are different for each ISP.

Which

To remove the block:

  1. Log in to a profile My EE the account.
  2. go to food menu -> Device management.
  3. Set Content Lock to turning off.
  4. Please also email protectard@ee.co.uk letting them know that ProtonVPN has been incorrectly categorized as inappropriate and should not be blocked.

If you’re still having trouble, here’s the EE Contact Us page.

If you try to visit the ProtonVPN website while the ban is in place, you will see this page. You can access our website by clicking Sign in or Register If you are a bill payer for an EE account. If you are not a bill payer, click Enter credit card. You must enter a valid credit card number to prove that you are over 18 years old.

  4. You will then need to enter a valid credit card number to prove that you are over 18 years old. £1 will be deducted from your card and will then be refunded to you via your next call credit or phone bill.
  5. Once you prove you’re over 18, O2 will remove the block.
