How to configure Cisco AnyConnect VPN Client for Mac

Because this website uses an older two-step authentication method, you may not see the updated version of the two-step authentication screens when you download the installer.
Cisco AnyConnect is the recommended VPN client for Mac. The built-in VPN client for Mac is another option but is more likely to experience connection drops.
Abstract
Stanford’s VPN allows you to connect to the Stanford network as if you were on campus, making access to restricted services possible. To connect to a VPN from your Mac, you need to install the Cisco AnyConnect VPN client.
Two types of VPN are available:
- Stanford default (split tunneling). When using a Stanford VPN from home, we generally recommend a Stanford VPN. This routes and encrypts all traffic destined for Stanford sites and systems through the Stanford network as if you were on a campus. All non-Stanford University traffic will travel directly to its destination.
- Full traffic (unsplit tunnel). This encrypts all Internet traffic from your computer, but may inadvertently prevent you from using resources on your local network, such as a network printer at home. If you are traveling or using wi-fi in an unreliable place like a coffee shop or hotel, you may want to encrypt all of your internet traffic with our full traffic unsplit VPN to provide an extra layer of security.
You can select the type of VPN you want to use each time you connect.
Install VPN Client
- Download the Cisco AnyConnect installer for Mac.
- Double-click a file InstallAnyConnect.pkg File to start the Cisco AnyConnect Installer Wizard.
- When the welcome window appears, click Complete.
- Select your hard drive as the destination where you want to install Cisco AnyConnect and then click Complete.
- click Installations To perform a standard installation of the program.
- When prompted, enter the administrator account password for Mac and click Install the operating system.
- When the program has finished installing, click Nearby.
Contact Stanford VPN
- To start the VPN client, open a file Applications folder and go to Cisco > Cisco AnyConnect Secure Mobility Client.app.
- When prompted to use a VPN, enter su-vpn.stanford.edu Then click Connection.
- Enter the following information and then click OK:
- Collection: Determine Stanford split tunnel virtual (non-Stanford traffic flows normally over an unencrypted internet connection) or full undivided traffic tunnel (All your internet traffic flows through the VPN connection)
- user name: Your SUNet ID
- password: Your SUNet ID password
- Then, the two-step authentication prompt is displayed.
- Enter a passcode or enter the number that corresponds to another option (In this example, enter 1 to authenticate using Duo Push on an iPad). You may have to scroll down the list to see all of your options. then press Complete.
- If your only registered authentication method is the Print List, Hardware Token, or Google Authenticator, the list will not be displayed. Enter a passcode in a file Answer field and click Complete.
- click Acceptance To connect to the Stanford Public VPN service.
- Once the VPN connection is established, a Cisco AnyConnect icon with a small padlock appears in the dock.
Disconnect from Stanford VPN
- Click the Cisco AnyConnect icon with a small lock.
- At the command prompt, click Disconnect.
