How to Fix ERR_CONNECTION_REFUSED Error in Chrome

For regular users, the really confusing errors are those where it’s sometimes hard to distinguish a problem with your WordPress site from something else, like a network or browser problem.
“ERR_CONNECTION_REFUSED” is a particularly common and usually non-WordPress related error message that you’ll occasionally see in Chrome. Fortunately, it is relatively easy to determine the cause of this problem. In this post, we will explain what the message means and how to fix it. Typically this includes the following steps:
- Check to see if the page itself has fallen.
- Restart your router.
- Clear browser cache.
- Evaluate your proxy settings and adjust them as needed.
- Temporarily disable your antivirus and firewall.
- Clear your DNS cache.

1. Check the status of the site

To do this, unplug the power supply to your router. You will then need to wait for about 30 seconds, before reconnecting it. Once the router is back on, try to access the page that returned an error. If it loads, you are good to go. If not, there is likely another reason.
3. Clear browser cache
Like any good internet browser, Chrome will store information in a cache on your computer or device. This includes browsing history, saved login data, and cookies – all recorded in order to load relevant pages more quickly the next time they are visited.

Although useful, caches can cause many problems when they become outdated. This is because the cached version of the page may not match the current live version. Fortunately, this problem is easily resolved by clearing the cache.
But before doing that, you can easily check to see if it is a browser cache issue by first opening the browser in incognito mode. Or you can try a different browser. If you still see the error, you’ll want to continue clearing the cache.
To do this, start by opening the main Chrome menu (in the upper-right corner of the browser window). From there choose More tools: You can then click Clear browser data.

4. Evaluate your proxy settings and adjust them as needed
With security threats constantly increasing, it is no wonder that many people are now using individual solutions to protect their sensitive data. A common way to do this is through the use of proxy servers.
A proxy lets you connect to the Internet using a different IP address, and acts as an intermediary between your browser and the websites you visit. In addition to keeping your IP address private, it can also help filter cache data and server connections.
Just as with caching, a proxy can be useful, but it can also cause an ERR_CONNECTION_REFUSED message to appear. For example, a web server might reject the IP address attached to a proxy server, and then refuse the actual connection as a result.
It is also possible that the proxy server is offline or incorrectly configured. In short, if the error message in question occurs, it is worth checking your proxy settings.
Chrome actually has its own proxy section, which can make this step a particularly simple process. After all, you won’t need to spend any time searching for the right tools in your browser.
To get started, access Settings menu in your Chrome browser. This will open the full list of options. under System (You will need to click on Advanced at the bottom to see this), you should find an entry titled Open proxy settings. Selecting it, you will be taken to the corresponding menu:

You might start noticing a recurring feature here, since this kind of advanced security can sometimes lead to connectivity issues (much like caching and proxy servers).
This is because firewalls can often block pages you don’t need, or deny safe content entirely. To check if this is your case, try disabling your firewall and antivirus. Of course, this is not recommended unless you know for sure that the site you intend to visit is safe.
In addition, you should only disable this type of software temporarily. Restart it after you’ve finished checking to see if the error is resolved, so you don’t become vulnerable to attacks. If you frequently encounter errors due to your firewall or antivirus software, you may want to consider changing what you are using.
6. Clear the DNS cache
As somewhat of an extension of the previous troubleshooting step, your next task will be to clear the DNS cache. Although most people are aware that their browser creates a cache, many do not know that their operating system does the same thing.
For example, the DNS cache contains all temporary entries of pages that you have accessed using your browser. These entries store basic information about domain names and addresses of pages you’ve visited.
The purpose of this feature is similar to that of other types of caches. It speeds up the loading process, as it eliminates the need to connect to the site’s DNS server frequently. This will save you time in the long run. However, you may sometimes see some short-term issues.
If the stored entry no longer matches the current version of the website it is referring to, technical errors such as the ERR_CONNECTION_REFUSED message are not unusual. Fortunately, clearing the DNS cache is a quick and easy solution.
Again, the way to do this will depend on your operating system.

Start the start menu by pressing the Windows key and search for “CMD”. This should bring back the command prompt.

You will then see a confirmation that it has successfully cleared the DNS resolver cache.
