How to set up a VPN connection on Android
👨💻
Browsing the web with an unsecured connection, like the open Wi-Fi at your favorite local coffee shop, can be dangerous. It’s not very difficult for an experienced hacker to listen to all that traffic between your device and the Internet, and if you happen to reveal any sensitive information about you (Social Security number, credit card information, photos, that kind of thing), the consequences can be devastating. We’re not fans of that kind of warning, but it’s true, and that’s where solutions like VPNs can help. However, a VPN is not only useful for protecting your data. With it, you can access region-locked content (eg Netflix/YouTube outside eligible countries), because basically what a VPN does is route your traffic through a (usually) geographically remote server. For example, if you live in the US, for example, sites and services will be tricked into thinking you’re actually from Germany, for example, as long as you’re using a VPN that has a server on the ground there. Furthermore, it is possible that the IT department at your workplace or university has a VPN server that you can use to access the respective network and, therefore, files and documents remotely. Now that you have a basic understanding of what a VPN is, you may be wondering if Android does it. Fortunately, the answer is yes, and we’ll show you how. Just keep in mind that some VPN standards may require you to download a third-party app for the functionality (such as OpenVPN Connect), which is not covered in this guide. Identical across most Android devices, so just re-create the steps on your devices.
