How to set up private internet access on routers in 2021 [Guide]

Private Internet Access is one of the biggest brands in the VPN industry. Although the VPN is compatible with a lot of platforms and devices, there is no dedicated app or client for routers. Instead, you will have to manually configure the VPN on your router.

In this article, I will explain how to set up PIA on routers.

Setup Guidelines for Private Internet Access on Routers

PIA is compatible with a few brands of routers. However, it is more configurable if you have a DD-WRT interface. In this article, I will walk you through the installation steps for DD-WRT, the most widely used firmware.

Setting DD-WRT

Here’s what you need to do to set up PIA on DD-WRT.

[*]Step 1:[*] Subscribe to PIA.

[*]Step 2:[*] Open the DD-WRT management interface and go to [*]“Setup” > “Basic Setup”[*].

[*]Step 3:[*] Enter the PIA DNS servers in the static DNS fields as follows:

  • DNS constant 1 = [*]209.222.18.222[*]
  • Constant DNS 2 = [*]209.222.18.218[*]

[*]The fourth step:[*] Now go to Network Address Server (DHCP) settings and make sure of the following:

  • Use DNSMasq for DHCP = [*]Verification[*]
  • Use DNSMasq for DNS = [*]Verification[*]
  • DHCP-certified = [*]Verification[*]

[*]Fifth step:[*] [*]Memorizes[*] And [*]Settings app[*].

[*]Sixth step:[*] Now click File [*]’Accommodation’ [*] tab and click[*] “IPV6″[*].

[*]Seventh step:[*] Set IPv6 to [*]’Champions’, [*]Save and apply settings.

[*]Step 8:[*] Transfer to [*]services.[*]

[*]Step 9:[*] Remove the DNS suffix (if any).

[*]Step 10:[*] Under DHCP Server, set User Domain to [*]”LAN & WLAN”[*].

[*]Step 11:[*] Under DNSMasq, make sure that the following is correct:

  • DNSMasq: [*]Maybe[*]
  • Local DNS: [*]Maybe[*]
  • No DNS Rebinding: [*]Maybe[*]

[*]Step 12:[*] [*]Memorizes[*] And [*]Settings app[*].

[*]Step 13:[*] Transfer to [*]“Service” > “VPN”[*].

[*]Step 14:[*] Under OpenVPN Client, click Enable in Starting the OpenVPN Client to see more options.

[*]Step 15:[*] click [*]’Maybe’ [*]In advanced options, more options will appear.

[*]Step 16:[*] come in now:

  • IP address / name = [*]us-west.privateinternetaccess.com[*] [*]

  • Username and password = [*]Your PIA username and password[*]
  • TLS encryption = [*]Nobody[*]
  • LZO pressure = [*]Yes[*]
  • nat = [*]Maybe[*]

[*]Step 17:[*] Type the following information into the additional configuration:

  • persistence key
  • continuation ton
  • tls-client
  • remote server

[*]Step 18:[*] Download this file https://www.privateinternetaccess.com/openvpn/ca.rsa.2048.crt

[*]Step 19:[*] Once downloaded, right-click on the ca.rsa.2048 file, then click Open with > Notepad.

[*]Step 20:[*] Select all the contents of the file by pressing Ctrl + A, then press Ctrl + C.

[*]Step 21:[*] Find the CA Cert field and paste the contents of the copied file by pressing “[*]Ctrl “+” V “[*]. Make sure the full text of [*]“—–Certificate of Initiation–”[*] And [*]“—– Ending the certificate—–” [*]has been pasted.

[*]Step 22:[*] [*]Memorizes[*] And [*]Settings app[*].

[*]Step 23:[*] To check if the VPN is now active, tap [*]Status”>”OpenVPN”[*]. When connected, you will see the message [*]”Customer: Connected Success”[*]

PIA Compliant Routers

Unfortunately, you can’t just make PIA work with every router. Instead, you need routers that allow you to configure the VPN service.

Here are three different types of routers that support Private Internet Access.

Integrated flash routers with new firmware

Flashing refers to installing a new firmware in your router. This firmware acts as the operating system inside your router and ends up limiting its capabilities.

For a router to support a VPN like PIA, it needs firmware like DD-WRT or Tomato.

  • DD-WRT is compatible with more routers than Tomato. Allows you to adjust the range of the Wi-Fi signal and give priority to Internet traffic.
  • Tomato allows you to run two VPN servers simultaneously. It is also more user-friendly and has more bandwidth monitoring options than DD-WRT.

OpenVPN Compatible Routers

Some routers support the OpenVPN protocol allowing you to use any VPN that works on open source technology.

Since PIA uses OpenVPN, this device works perfectly as a private router for accessing the Internet. Moreover, with this router at your disposal, you will not need to flash a new firmware.
