How to use µTorrent (utorrent) [Complete Guide with Screenshots]

If you want to learn how to use uTorrent properly, we will show you the best way to do it. We’ve spent the past decade using torrent clients for testing and research. Let’s have a look at how to use uTorrent on your own without any issues.

The first thing you should know about uTorrent is that there are now three versions, Pro, Web and Classic, of the program (with the same team behind them, BitTorrent).

For this reason, downloading a torrent file from uTorrent may mean following a different set of steps depending on the type of client you are using. We will start with the latest software, which is a browser-based software.

BitTorrent officially launched its new web-based torrent software in 2018. It is called uTorrent Web.

Now, even though it works online, users still have to download and install some files on uTorrent Web which works. Although uTorrent Web (i.e. its stable version) was officially launched in 2018, it has been in its beta phase for a long time.

The big difference between uTorrent Web and other torrent clients is that all torrent download activity takes place inside the user’s web browser.

Pro tip:

Download your torrent files at breakneck speeds and extra privacy with SeedBox.

Just like all other uTorrent versions, uTorrent Web allows users to play video and audio files even before downloading the entire program from the Internet. This means that you can play all of your content from within the web browser of your choice.

uTorrent Web supports all file types that regular torrent clients support.

Once you download uTorrent Web (and install it on your computer), you will be able to open all magnet links and torrent files in your web browser window automatically. You are free to search for the content you want on different torrent sites or you can also make use of the search box feature provided in uTorrent Web. The platform will forward all your queries to Google.

As far as the actual download process goes, it is fast and problem-free. You will be able to enjoy a smooth operating experience. uTorrent Web even has the ability to pull subtitles automatically. Of course, you will need to make sure that you already have subtitles in your torrent file.

There are plenty of other settings as well. You have the option to choose the language of your application in addition to the default torrent download folder. If you want uTorrent Web to open each of your files in a separate tab, you can too.

Do you want to start uTorrent Web automatically as soon as you turn on your computer? You can also do that. uTorrent Web can also delete your entire search history automatically if you want to. Additionally, you can make it your default torrent client.

So what does all this mean for the original uTorrent client? Well, it is now called uTorrent Classic. The team behind uTorrent said that it plans to offer uTorrent Classic to users in the future.

Now, read on to find out how to use uTorrent today:

Security Gladiators do not in any way encourage or condone any kind of copyright infringement or circumvention of restrictions. This includes torrenting or downloading illegal content. Torrenting is a great way to access and share all kinds of content on the internet, and there are plenty of opportunities to engage in legal and safe torrenting activities online. You need to do your research to find out if these services and torrenting activities are legal in your country. We always suggest using a VPN while torrenting.

Step by step guide: How to use uTorrent

Step 1: Download uTorrent

The process of downloading uTorrent is very simple. Here’s how:

  1. First, go to the official uTorrent website and download the app. uTorrent is free, so you don’t have to worry about providing any payment information.
  2. Once you locate and download the file, you will need to double-click the .exe file. After that, the installer will start the installation process automatically.
  3. Then, tap on the option that says Next twice on the following screens.
  4. Stop by and read the license agreement shown if you wish. Next, click I Agree and then hit Next.
  5. Next comes an option that allows you to create a new firewall rule for uTorrent. We suggest you check it out.
  6. Next, the installation process will ask if you want uTorrent to run when you boot your device. Select that and go on to click Next.
  7. Now, this part is really important: the official uTorrent installer contains some adware, so you can simply click Decline on the screen where it asks you to install the adware. If you do this, you can avoid adware all together. You can repeat the same set of steps for whatever else uTorrent might want to install on your computer.

Once you’re done, just click Done and you’re ready to go.

Step 2: Select where you want to download your files from

In other words, you will need to find the source of the torrent.

Without a source for your torrent types, you cannot download any content.

With that said, we know that as soon as someone mentions the word “Torrent” in any conversation, people automatically start thinking about hacking.

But there are many ways in which you can download more content than you can watch without getting close to pirated content.

The two most important destinations for legal torrent files are the internet archive and this wiki page. There, you can search and find out where/how to download a wide range of legal content for free.

Available content includes:

  • books
  • Movies
  • TV series
  • software applications
  • audio content
  • Other video content

The above links provide plenty of options and features for uploading and downloading movies. You can also share your movies or files if you like.

this is important:

Again, everything is legal and free – provided you have a decent internet connection to download files.

In this guide, as an example, we’ll look at another source: This source only offers academic content, but you can still use it without having to register with a university or other academic institution. We will try to download the Mathematical Method of Quantum Finance file to show how easy it is to download content from uTorrent.

So you go to the link we mentioned above, find the address we mentioned and then click on the yellow/brown button on the right side of the screen labeled “Download”.

Once you click on it, the browser will download the torrent file. Since it is a small file, it will download very quickly.

Step 3: Choose the files

As we mentioned above, stay tuned for the torrent file as it will download very quickly. Once you do that, you will need to double-click on it and then allow uTorrent to open and view its contents.

Most of the time, you will have to download everything that comes in a particular torrent file. However, uTorrent allows you to select and deselect the file(s) you want to download to your computer.

uTorrent will also show you some options on the left side to allow you to save content where you want to save it. You also have the option to give the file a rating, as this can make it easier for you to sort the downloaded content. Once you are satisfied with all the settings, you can click OK.

Step 4: Download speed and other information

If you just go back to the main user interface of uTorrent, you will see that there is a Torrent section on the left side of the program. This provides all the details you need to know when downloading any type of file.

This is useful if you want to know how fast a torrent downloads your file (depending on your internet connection, of course) and how long it takes uTorrent to actually download the full file. Again, these factors may depend on the speed of your connection.

Step 5: Don’t be shy about magnetic ties

There are two ways to download torrent files for the content you want to consume. The first method is to download the .torrent file first, which we just discussed above. The other way is to make use of magnetic bonds. They both work roughly the same way.

The main advantage of using magnet links over torrent links is that it removes the step of actually downloading the torrent file.

When you click a magnetic link, your web browser will automatically open the torrent file in your torrent client.

Just like .torrent files, magnetic links can download any type of content for you. Magnetic ties are great for the simple reason that they require very little maintenance and are easy to use.

As mentioned above, simply click on the magnet link and your torrent client, uTorrent, will do the rest.

Step 6: Sometimes you may want to prioritize your downloads

You may find yourself in a situation where you have to download several files at once.

Torrent clients allow you to choose which one to download first while maintaining connections with other torrent downloads so that the user does not lose their peers and farmers.

If you want to take advantage of this feature in uTorrent, you need to go back to the main window of the application and then click on the torrent you want to download before any of the other torrents.

As mentioned earlier, torrents are on the right side of the app. After you click the torrent to set priorities, you have to hit the up arrow button a few times, depending on how far you want it to go up in the list of current downloads. If you press the button with the downward arrow, then depending on how often you press it, you can move the selected torrent download to the bottom of the priority list.

Step 7: Save some of your bandwidth for other tasks

Multitasking is a necessity in today’s online world. So if you don’t want a slow browsing experience while downloading torrents, you will have to take advantage of the speed limit on torrent downloads.

In uTorrent, this process is simple. Simply double-click on the torrent file that is currently being downloaded. As mentioned earlier, torrents are listed on the right side of uTorrent.

Once you double-click, a new properties window should pop up. This is where you have the option to set maximum download and upload speeds.

Do note that speeds are in Kbps. You can set the value to 0 to allow uTorrent to use as much bandwidth as possible.

Step 8: Don’t forget to give back to the community by seeding

As you may understand by now, the only reason why the torrent community continues to survive is because it is based on a P2P (peer-to-peer) system. This model has stood the test of time, and has dominated the conversation around peer-based file sharing.

More specifically, once you download a certain file, you earn a certain amount of responsibility. After you can complete a torrent download, you should always allow uTorrent to keep the download running. This way, other torrent users on the network with a fast enough internet connection can download part of the file from your system.

This process is known as seeding.

You are free to get rid of the magnet link or torrent file after you have done some seeding on the downloaded files.

To do this, simply right-click on a specific file, and from the displayed menu choose the option that says: Remove and Delete .torrent.

And that’s it. You also have the option to stream content from the downloaded file while uTorrent is streaming the file.
