How to use ProtonVPN on Linux

In this guide, we briefly discuss the different ways you can use ProtonVPN on Linux and provide a guide to setting up and using the ProtonVPN Linux app, which is the method we recommend.
It’s easy to get ProtonVPN for free on Linux for the distro of your choice. There are several ways to use ProtonVPN on Linux:
1. Official ProtonVPN Linux App
ProtonVPN Linux is a desktop VPN app that is fully featured with a graphical user interface. It is the recommended way for most people to use ProtonVPN on their Linux systems. We discuss how to install and use this app in this article.

2. Official ProtonVPN CLI Interface
ProtonVPN CLI is a full-featured command line tool recommended for people who prefer to work in Terminal, want an application that uses minimal system resources, or works with Linux servers. Please note that ProtonVPN CLI does not yet support Split Tunneling and does not work on headless servers.

3. Set up OpenVPN manually
ProtonVPN Linux and ProtonVPN CLI use the highly secure OpenVPN protocol to secure a VPN connection to our servers. You can also configure OpenVPN manually in Linux using NetworkManager or the command line. This may be useful on devices that are not supported by our ProtonVPN Linux app or the ProtonVPN CLI, but if we stop the server, you may need to download new OpenVPN configuration files.

4. IKEv2 manual setup
IKEv2 is a secure and fast VPN protocol that you can configure manually in Linux using strongSwan. If we pull the server, you may need to re-modify the configuration file.

How to install ProtonVPN Linux app
The official ProtonVPN Linux app allows you to protect your Linux devices with ProtonVPN while controlling the VPN via an intuitive and easy-to-use graphic interface.
This app natively supports ProtonVPN’s advanced features, including:
- NetShield Adblocker
- permanent kill key
- kill switch
- Safe kernel
Not only is the Linux app easy to use, but its installation is quick and simple, no matter what distro you use. This article explains how to use our official Linux app. We have separate installation directories for all supported distributions:
If you are using the community developed version of our Linux app, we recommend that you uninstall it before installing the new app. Instructions for this command are provided in each distro setup guide.
How to use ProtonVPN Linux App
Once the ProtonVPN app is installed, open it with the app launcher and search for it ProtonVPN.
Next, sign in by entering your Proton account credentials. (If you previously used ProtonVPN Linux CLI and upgraded, you do not need to log in again.)

Once logged into the app, you can connect to the fastest VPN server available (as determined by your geolocation and server traffic) in one click using speed dial button.
Search by country
You can search for VPN servers by country by scrolling through the list of countries or typing in the search bar. You can connect to the server of your choice by clicking on the green color Connection button.
P2P File Sharing
You can share torrent files while connected to ProtonVPN servers that have the two-way arrow symbol (pictured below). (Only available on Basic, Plus, and Visionary plans.)

You can use ProtonVPN to access your favorite streaming platforms. Servers that have a play arrow icon next to their name support streaming. (Only available on Plus and Visionary plans.)

You can also check the traffic load on any particular server by hovering over a file I icon.
The Quick Settings The menu contains three buttons that allow you to control the features of Secure Core, NetShield, and Kill Switch.
Safe kernel
The lock button on the left of Quick Settings The menu allows you to turn on Secure Core employment or turning off. (Only available with the Plus or Visionary plan.)
Secure Core routes your internet traffic through strict private VPN servers located in countries with strong data protection laws before sending it to a second VPN server in your desired country.
Once you turn on Secure Core employment, you will see different options for multi hop VPN connections.

Shield button in the middle of a file Quick Settings The menu allows you to choose the level of NetShield protection. (Only available with the Plus or Visionary plan.)
NetShield is our ad blocker that uses DNS filtering to prevent your device from loading malware, ads and trackers, keeping your device safe and speeding up browsing.

kill switch
The toggle button to the right of the file Quick Settings The list of Kill Switch and Permanent Kill Switch allows you to employment or turning off.
- kill switch It blocks all external connections from your device if your VPN connection drops unintentionally. It does not block external connections if you disconnect the VPN manually.
- permanent kill key It blocks all external connections from your device unless you are connected to a VPN. It will continue to block external connections if you manually disconnect the VPN or restart your computer.
Note that if you activate the permanent Kill Switch, it will continue to block external connections even if you sign out of ProtonVPN.

To sign out of ProtonVPN, click the arrow button in the status bar and select Log out.
system tray icon
Our Linux app can display a file system tray icon It remains active when you close the main ProtonVPN window and allows you to do so easily speed dial or Unplug VPN.

Supported Distributions
ProtonVPN Linux is currently officially supported on the following distributions:
- Debian 10+
- Ubuntu 20.04 (LTS) +
- Mint 20+
- MX Linux 19+
- Kali Linux
- OS 6.0+ Elementary
- Fedora 33+
- Archlinux / Manjaro
We are working on adding official support for more distros. The Debian repository should run on many Debian-based distributions, and we invite users to test running our software on their systems. But we can’t guarantee support if things don’t work on these unsupported systems.
