Online anonymity and privacy are two things that more and more people are preoccupied with these days. New and exciting technology sometimes brings a dark side, and in the case of web-related content and tools, privacy becomes a huge issue.
One simple and effective way to reduce your internet footprint is to access the web using a VPN or a Virtual Private Network. With Hola, users can take advantage of the free VPN service directly from their PC (Mac and PC) or mobile device.
In addition to adding a layer of privacy for browsing and internet access, Hola helps users access content that is restricted in their country or content only available from a specific geographic location.
Please remember that Hola’s free peer-to-peer VPN will use some of your systems’ WiFi or data when it’s running in the background. The developers claim that this is the bare minimum how to route traffic through different sites/users. Purchasing a subscription will remove the peer-to-peer VPN.
Hola Google Chrome Extension
You can add the free Hola web extension directly to your Chrome browser, without the need for installation, setup or additional files.

From your Mac, desktop or laptop computer, launch Google Chrome.

Go to the Google search page or type “hola chrome extension” in the address bar
. When the results appear, click on the Chrome Web Store link (it should be the first).

When the Chrome Store loads, click the blue “Add to Chrome” button in the top-right corner.

When prompted in the pop-up, click on “Add extension”.

After a few moments another popup will appear informing you that the Hola extension has been installed.

Now Hola is installed, you will see a fireball smiley icon somewhere on your browser toolbar
. Click the Hola icon to view various options, popular sites, and the country you are connecting to. You can turn it off by clicking the power button in the upper-right corner.

To access the extension’s settings, tap the three-dot menu icon in the upper-left corner, then tap Settings. You can also; Sign in, change the language, and access help from the same menu.

To test the Hola VPN extension, we visited NBC.com from a Canadian IP address and browsed to a TV show.

Once the episode loads, you can see that Hola is connected to a US IP address because the icon in the toolbar is now a US flag. Normally, visiting this content will be restricted from a Canadian IP address.

Access the Play Store app and tap on it.

Once in the Play Store, type “hola VPN” in the search bar, and type the first result that appears.

On the Hola app page, tap “Install”.

Review the permissions screen and tap Accept when you’re ready to proceed.

Once Hola Free VPN Proxy app is installed, click on the green “Open” button.

On the Introduction screen, review the terms and conditions, then press “OK,” followed by “Continue.”

Here on the main screen of the application you can see the country that is identified by the flag in the upper left corner. You can search for things or go directly to a specific URL by typing it in the search box at the top.

To access Hola settings and additional options, tap the three-dot menu in the upper right corner
. The drop down menu will allow you to: Enable Unblocker, Enable Popular List, Clear History, Share and Manage Settings. You can also add favorites by clicking the star, and also reload the proxy by clicking the refresh button.

To change the country you’re using the Hola app in, tap the flag in the upper-right corner, then select a country from the list.

To use a specific app with Hola VPN turned on, tap on it from the home screen
. In our testing, we used Chrome.

Once you have clicked on the app you want to be directed through Hola, select the country from the dropdown list next to the flag
. Once you select a country, click Open. You will see a dialog pop up with some basic information about how Hola works, click OK to continue.

Now with Chrome open, we’ve gone to abc.go.com and browsed the TV show Dancing with the Stars. When you see the little key icon in the status bar, it means that you are properly connected to Hola VPN.

Once the episode page loads, we choose one that doesn’t require verification
. Some sites make users wait a few weeks to see the latest episodes.

After clicking on the play button, a brief ad appeared before playing the full episode. The original IP address used for this test was based in Canada.
Tips, tricks and warnings
- If while using a Chrome browser extension you can’t access the site’s content, click “No, fix it” from the Hola drop-down menu.
- If you are using the free peer-to-peer version, check your data and WiFi usage from time to time to make sure nothing is out of the ordinary.
- If your device/browser is not listed above, go to Hola download page to get the appropriate setup file.
