I spent a few weeks testing and researching Norton Secure VPN to see how it compares to other best VPNs.
I can safely say that Norton Secure VPN is an easy-to-use VPN with good speeds that is good for basic uses like browsing online, hiding your activity from your Internet Service Provider (ISP), and accessing some geo-restricted content.
Norton Secure VPN’s easy-to-use apps have an intuitive design that makes it easy to navigate for someone who has never used a VPN. You can connect to a server in one or two clicks, the features are easy to find and use, and most of the functions are in Settings The tab includes brief explanations. However, experienced users will find that Norton Secure VPN also has some great features like Tor support, Wi-Fi security, and split tunneling.

Norton Secure VPN has industry-standard VPN security features:

Norton Secure VPN does not have built-in IPv6, DNS, and WebRTC leak protection, which puts your data at greater risk of exposure if the VPN leaks. Most major VPNs have these types of leak protection, or at least a combination of them. But I’ve done several IPv6, DNS and WebRTC leak tests on servers in 10+ countries and fortunately haven’t seen any leaks. However, there is a possibility that the VPN could experience leaks, and I don’t like having to manually disable IPv6 and WebRTC and use third-party DNS servers to avoid leaks – Norton Secure VPN should offer at least some of this protection, like ExpressVPN and TunnelBear.
Norton Secure VPN supports Onion Router (Tor) traffic on all servers. Honestly, you should always use a Tor connection over a VPN to protect your identity. There is a small chance that your IP address will be exposed while you are surfing the Tor network, but the VPN adds an extra layer of protection to keep you safe even if it does. For example, if your IP address is leaked, only the IP of the VPN will be exposed, and your personal IP address remains hidden. Also note that using Tor over a VPN will slow down your internet speed due to the extra levels of encryption (websites took up to 30 seconds to load for me). Norton Secure VPN has good Tor support, but I prefer the convenience that ProtonVPN offers – it lets you browse Tor sites in regular browsers (Chrome, Firefox, Opera).

Norton Secure VPN has an easy to use split tunneling that allows you to exclude certain apps from the VPN tunnel. In my tests, I had no issues routing my bank app through my ISP network (many banks block VPNs), and I watched content on Netflix while connected to a VPN.
Split tunneling is only available on Windows and Android – Most VPNs don’t support split tunneling on macOS and iOS, but if you’re looking for a VPN that supports split tunneling on macOS, I recommend ExpressVPN.
I like the split tunneling feature of Norton Secure VPN, but I prefer the convenience that Private Internet Access and ProtonVPN provide by also allowing you to split IP addresses. This allows you to exclude a website’s IP address from the VPN tunnel instead of excluding an entire browser.
Overall, there are better split-tunneling features, but Norton Secure VPN’s split-tunneling tool works just fine (no bugs), and it’s very easy to use.

Block Ad Tracking
Norton Secure VPN has a good ad blocker. In my tests, the ad blocker stopped most ads from loading on ad-dense sites like media and social media outlets, making websites load faster and look cleaner.
And unlike many VPNs, Norton Secure VPN’s ad blocker is available on all platforms. The only drawback of Norton Secure VPN’s ad blocker is that it also doesn’t include malware blockers like PIA MACE for Private Internet Access and NetShield from ProtonVPN.
Overall, Norton Secure VPN does an excellent job of getting rid of those annoying ads, and it works on all apps.

Wi-Fi Security
I like Norton Secure VPN’s Wi-Fi Security feature, which keeps you safe on unsecured and vulnerable networks. It uses advanced scanning to identify dangerous networks, and alerts you when you connect to a network. I also like that you can configure the app to automatically connect you to the VPN server when it detects that you are connected to a dangerous network.
My only problem is that Wi-Fi Security is only available on iOS and Android. It is one of my favorite features offered by Norton Secure VPN, and I would love to see this feature added to desktop applications as well.
Overall, Norton Secure VPN protects your data on unsecured and hacked networks. Its Wi-Fi Security feature alerts you to dangerous networks and automatically connects you to a VPN server when you try to connect to a dangerous server.

Norton Secure VPN has a no-logs policy, but it’s not strict enough in my opinion. While Norton Secure VPN does not log the websites you visit or the files you download, it does log your IP address.
Norton Secure VPN says it keeps records of your IP address to select the appropriate language settings and to deliver content to your device, but that explanation on the website is too vague and the customer support representatives couldn’t give me a clear answer as to why the provider stores IP addresses. I can’t fully trust a VPN that logs users’ IP addresses because it puts their privacy at risk – Norton Secure VPN can pass this information on to the authorities if requested.
In addition to IP addresses, Norton Secure VPN also logs your email address (for registration and billing purposes) and your bandwidth (for security, network operations, and support).
Logging IP addresses is even worse because Norton Secure VPN is based in the US, which is part of the 5/9/14 Eyes Alliance (a group of countries that share surveillance data). If the US government requests user data, Norton Secure VPN will have to share the user’s information with law enforcement. Private Internet Access is also located in the United States, but Private Internet Access has proven in court several times that it does not store user data.
Generally, Norton Secure VPN does not log user traffic or files you download, but rather logs users’ IP addresses and is headquartered in the 5/9/14 Eyes Alliances country. Honestly, Norton Secure VPN’s no-logs policy isn’t on par with the best VPN providers on the market – but it’s also not the worst I’ve seen.

Norton Secure VPN Speed and Performance
Speed tests were conducted by connecting to a server in more than 30 countries where the Norton Secure VPN server is located and saw an average speed drop of 83%. This isn’t usually an acceptable drop in speed, but I live in a country (Romania) with really fast speeds – so I asked my colleague in the US to run speed tests as well to get a fairer picture of Norton Secure VPN’s fast, and it reports a 40 percent drop. %, which is approx.
Norton Secure VPN has very fast speeds on local servers. While my colleague had fast speeds on remote servers, my speeds with Norton Secure VPN were much slower than with other top VPNs when I connected to remote servers in the US and Japan.

Download speeds dropped 81%, but my online browsing was still fast — websites, HD videos to Netflix, and 4K YouTube videos loaded right away, and I didn’t experience buffering while skipping videos.
Then I connected to a US server and saw a slowdown of 77%. I was surprised that the download speed was a bit faster in the US than on the Romanian server, but streaming wasn’t as smooth in the US – HD videos and 4K videos on YouTube took 5-10 seconds to load, and I experienced slight buffering while watching HD videos 4k. However, I had very fast browsing speeds, and VoIP calls were smooth without freezing or disconnecting.
Finally, I connected to a Japanese server. My speeds dropped 90%, and the slowdown was more noticeable than in the US and Romania. Websites took 5-10 seconds to load, HD videos took up to 20 seconds to start, and I experienced frequent buffering while HD videos skipped. But VoIP calls were just as stable as my calls on the US server, and there was only a slight lag while gaming.
But I wanted to know what kind of speeds my US colleague has. My colleague first ran an offline speed test to get a baseline.
