Is Your Netflix VPN Not Working? Here are 9 easy fixes [2021]

/

Below, we detail some simple solutions to make your VPN work with Netflix.

1. Upgrade your VPN

The most effective way to solve Netflix VPN problems is to upgrade to one of the best VPNs for Netflix.

This is because most VPNs will never work with Netflix, no matter what solutions you try. The majority of VPN services lack technology, prioritize other features, or don’t have the resources to stream Netflix.

Our tests found it ExpressVPN is the most reliable VPN To get around the Netflix VPN ban in December 2021. Although expensive, the VPN is constantly working with US Netflix and nine other libraries.

ExpressVPN can also be used to bypass Hulu’s VPN blocks, and we’ve been able to stream HBO Max from outside the US when connected to its server in New York.

ExpressVPN works reliably with US Netflix.

If you want a free option, Windscribe is the only 100% free VPN that works with US Netflix. However, the free subscription is limited to only 10GB of data per month.

2. Connect to a different server

If you can’t access Netflix with a VPN, it means that Netflix has identified and blocked the IP address of the server you are connecting to.

To get a new IP, simply connect to another server in the same country. There is a possibility that the new server has not been blocked by Netflix yet.

Instead, use the table below. We have collected a list of servers from the best VPNs that work with popular Netflix regions.

Simply connect to one of these servers to stream the selected Netflix region:

VPN service Working VPN Servers
ExpressVPN Australia: Australia – Melbourne
Canada: Canada – Toronto
Japan: Japan – Tokyo
United kingdom: United Kingdom – London
we: USA – New Jersey – 2
PrivateVPN Australia: Australia – Sydney
Canada: Canada – Toronto
Japan: Japan – Tokyo
United kingdom: United Kingdom – London
we: USA – New York
ProtonVPN Australia: AU #19
Canada: CA#261
Japan: JP #77
United kingdom: UK No. 52
we: United States-New York #52

Once connected, refresh your desktop browser or restart your mobile app.

3. Delete browser cookies and cache

Many websites collect temporary site data through cookies and cache files.

Netflix can use this information to determine your true location, even when you are connected to a VPN server in a different country.

Clearing these files will force Netflix to show the library of the server you are connected to.

How to clear cookies and cache in Google Chrome:

  1. Open Google Chrome. Click the icon that looks like three dots at the top right of the window.
  2. Choose More tools > Clear browsing data, then select from the dropdown list All time.
  3. put a mark Cookies and other site data And Cached images and files.
  4. Click Clear data.
  5. Restart Google Chrome.
  6. Open Netflix.

  2. tap on Privacy tab> Site data management.
  3. Type Netflix In the search bar, select it, and then click Remove.
  4. Restart Safari.
  5. Open Netflix

Noticeable: This method only works on the desktop. On mobile, you will have to restart your device to clear the Netflix cache and cookies.

4. Disable IPv6 addresses

Netflix decides to show you the library based on your IPv6 address, not your IPv4 address (if you have one).

The problem is that many VPNs still do not support IPv6. If your IPV6 address leaks through the VPN tunnel, Netflix will show your local library.

For example, when testing it with a US server, Betternet was leaking our IPv6 address. This means that we can only stream TV shows and movies from our local Netflix library in the UK.

For further confirmation, we recommend blocking IPv6 on your device, rather than using the built-in VPN settings.

How to disable IPv6 on Windows:

  1. to open Network and the Internet settings.
  2. Choose Network and Sharing Center > Properties.
  3. Deselect Internet Protocol version 6 (TCP/IPv6).

How to disable IPv6 on a Mac:

  1. to open System Preferences and click network.
  2. click advanced at the bottom right. tap on TCP / IP tab.
  3. Click the dropdown menu next to IPv6 Configuration and choose turning off.
  4. click OK > Progressing.

You can check for IPv6 leaks using our VPN leak test tool.

5. Use Smart DNS

Some VPNs come with a Smart DNS function. Smart DNS can be used to unblock Netflix without having to connect to a VPN server.

Since the Netflix VPN was banned in August 2021, our tests found it Smart DNS is more reliable to unblock Netflix than full VPN services.

Smart DNS routes your Internet traffic through a proxy server somewhere else in the world. However, unlike a VPN, it Do not encrypt your traffic. It also does not include other security features.

Normally, we do not recommend using Smart DNS. However, if you just want to stream a geo-restricted Netflix library and are not concerned with privacy, Smart DNS is a good option.

Below are the VPNs we recommend that offer Smart DNS functionality:

  • ExpressVPN (media streamer)
  • Surfshark
  • Windscribe (ControlD)

Each VPN has a different way to set up Smart DNS. Visit your VPN provider’s support page for instructions.

6. Stream Netflix on your PC

If Netflix isn’t working for you on devices like iPhone, Fire TV Stick, or Google Chromecast, try watching the same video on your desktop or laptop.

As part of a VPN block, Netflix checks if the location of your IP address matches that of your DNS server.

Watching on your computer will most likely work because desktop VPN apps can route all traffic through their DNS servers, but mobile VPN apps cannot.

Additionally, make sure your VPN app is configured to use the VPN’s DNS servers. You can enable this in the VPN app’s connection settings.

A desktop VPN app can force all traffic through its own DNS servers.

7. Buy a residential IP address

As of August 2021, Netflix will automatically ban all non-residential IP addresses. Since most VPN servers are located in data centers, it is easy for Netflix to identify and restrict access to them.

To get around this, some VPNs allow you to pay extra for a residential IP address. Residential IP addresses make it seem like you’re connecting from home over a regular ISP connection. Thus, there is no way for Netflix to know that you are connected to a VPN.

Windscribe is the only best Netflix VPN that allows you to get a US local IP address. When using it, we were assigned an AT&T IP address. In our tests, we were able to stream US Netflix 100% of the time when connected to this server.

Despite its reliability, the downside of this method is its price. Windscribe’s US residential IP option costs $96.00 per year, with no option to pay monthly.

Windscribe residential IPs always work with Netflix.

Expert advice:
Be sure to buy a Residential IP And Not a Dedicated IP. Even though it’s unique to you, the assigned IP still belongs to the datacenter, so Netflix will still detect and block it.

8. Change the VPN protocol

If you cannot stream Netflix using your VPN, try changing the VPN protocol. Each protocol uses different encryption methods and tunnels. Some are better than others at bypassing Netflix’s VPN discovery methods.

For example, in our tests, we found that Lightway works best for streaming Netflix with ExpressVPN, and NordLynx protocol works best with NordVPN.

You can change your VPN protocol in the app settings. Experiment with each option until you find the right one. However, we highly recommend against using PPTP, as it provides weak encryption and has known security holes.

Change your VPN protocol to Optimized for Streaming.

9. Ask customer support for the best server

By following the above methods, you should make your VPN work with Netflix. However, if you still encounter the error message, contact your VPN customer support team.

Your customer support agent will be able to provide you with a list of up-to-date working servers.

For example, we contacted ExpressVPN’s customer support team when our server was blocked from streaming US Netflix. We got a list of three compatible servers within 30 seconds of asking.

Contact your VPN customer support to find working Netflix servers.

Most of these Netflix VPNs also have 24/7 live chat support, so you will always be able to get a quick answer to your query.
