Readers’ Choice Awards 2020: VPN Services
– 👌
You need a VPN to keep your internet traffic to yourself. However, not all VPN services are created equal. We always feature a selection of our top VPN picks, but in this story, we’re going to take you, readers, to share your favorite (or least favorite) VPNs. Your best choices remain consistent.
VPN Services 2020
Many VPNs offer a basic level for free and then require you to pay for advanced features, but there is no free tier Private Internet Access. But that doesn’t stop PCMag readers from appreciating the service. In fact, Private Internet Access’s overall satisfaction score of 8.9 (out of a possible 10) puts it first. They also have good averages in just about every degree, and they usually outperform or at least associate themselves with the competition. Click the results charts here or check out the full table of results below for comparison.
(Editors’ note: IPVanish is owned by Ziff Davis, PCMag’s parent company.)
You can see that Private Internet Access wins, but not by much. An overall satisfaction score of 8.9 – as it got last year – has close competitors at ProtonVPN and Surfshark. Call the two genres some surprising competition, as this is the first appearance of both in the results of a readers’ choice survey. Neither of them has fulfilled the requirement for responses in the past. But 2020 is the year of change.
ProtonVPN, known for its premium free version that has no data usage limit, outperforms Private Internet Access for setup (9.3), ease of use (9.2), performance (8.9) and perhaps the most obvious, in terms of reliability (9.1) and probability recommended (9.0) . That’s why ProtonVPN also received a Readers’ Choice Award this year.
The only reason we didn’t give Surfshark’s 3rd Readers’ Choice Award – which crushes it in many scores, especially the cost rated at 9.2, and the link with Private Internet Access for internet speed at 8.6 – is that it dropped quite a bit for the trustworthiness of 8.7. Surfshark has almost been able to make it up for the next year.
There are a few other notable scores among lower-tier VPNs here (anyone with an overall satisfaction score of 8.5 or less): ExpressVPN has an excellent setup score of 9.2, Avast manages ease of use of 9.1, Keepsolid’s VPN Unlimited scores 9.1 for the cost.
Perhaps most surprisingly, NordVPN, which certainly has the largest number of users among PCMag readers, is not very satisfied except for a setting score of 9.1. Last year, NordVPN ranked third with a total of 8.7; It fell by half a point to 8.2 this year, dropping to seventh.
Again at the bottom: Norton Secure VPN. Last year, it only got 7.8 for overall satisfaction, and this year it’s up to 7.5. Probably a lot of people use it because of the name. It was the second most used VPN among the survey respondents. But no one seems to like her.
