VPN ban in India: Parliament’s Standing Committee on Home Affairs has asked the government to ban VPNs (Virtual Private Networks) in India, describing them as cyber threats. The panel raised the technological challenges posed by VPN and darknet services and said they could be used to bypass cybersecurity walls and allow criminals to remain anonymous on the Internet. The solution suggested by the committee is that India should develop a coordination mechanism to ban VPNs permanently.

They are used by most companies in India to secure their digital assets and actually “avoid” cyber attacks. Virtual Private Networks (VPNs) have also been of great help to the shutdown as it facilitated smooth internet and access to private networks without problems in work from home situations.

The panel said the technological challenges posed by VPN and Dark Web services could bypass cybersecurity and allow criminals to remain anonymous on the Internet.
– The ability to easily download VPNs seems to be an issue with many websites that provide these facilities for free.
The committee recommends that the Ministry of Interior coordinate with the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (Meity) to identify and permanently block such VPNs with the help of Internet Service Providers (ISPs).
According to the report, the ministry was urged to take initiatives to strengthen tracking and monitoring mechanisms to screen VPN and dark web usage.
What does a VPN do? VPN services encrypt the data and hide the IP address. This allows people to check blocked websites. VPN services also help anonymize a person online, even on public Wi-Fi networks which is a useful security feature as it can keep hackers away.
