I am using an older iPhone. Will this guide help me?

Admittedly, if you’re using an old Apple device that no longer receives iOS updates, your VPN app may simply not be compatible. If you are using an iPhone 7 or earlier, it may be necessary to check with your VPN provider if their VPN client is running on deprecated iOS versions (iOS 12.4.1 or earlier).

If you are using an old iPhone with an iOS version that is considered outdated, one option might be to connect using the third-party OpenVPN Connect software. See our guide for details on how to install iPhone VPN manually using OpenVPN Connect.

VPN not connecting on iPhone? try this…

There are many common reasons why your VPN won’t connect. This includes issues with your account status, network settings, or app configurations. If your VPN is not connected, we recommend that you start troubleshooting it using the steps below.

please note

You need to check to see if the VPN is working after completing each troubleshooting tip.

  1. Force restart your iPhone.

Depending on the generation of your iPhone, you will need to force the restart by either pressing and holding the power button and the home button at the same time, or the power button and volume down button at the same time. For iPhone 8 and later, press and hold the power button and then quickly press the volume up button and then the volume down button.

  2. Update, delete and redownload your iOS VPN app from the App Store

Getting the latest version of the application will ensure that you do not have problems due to outdated software. Apps downloaded from the App Store should update automatically, but you can force the process manually by going to the App Store account section in iOS 13+ or the dedicated tab in older versions.

If that doesn’t fix the problems you’re experiencing, it’s worth uninstalling the app completely and re-downloading it from the App Store.

  3. Try different VPN servers in different regions

If you have only tried to connect to one VPN server, try more to verify that it is not just one server that is causing the problem.

  4. Check for any issues with your account

Try logging into your VPN through the provider’s website. If you can’t sign in, it’s possible that you are using the wrong password in the VPN app and you need to reset it. If the password is fine, check that your VPN account is still active. If the account is no longer active, you may need to renew your subscription or contact VPN customer support to find out why.

  5. Reset Wi-Fi settings

This method is known to fix connection issues for some users. However, it is only necessary if you are trying to connect to your VPN via WiFi.

On your iPhone or iPad, go to Settings > general > Re-Set > Reset network settings

  6. Reset your device’s IP address

    1. Play file Settings app on your iOS device and tap WIFI in the right pane.
    2. In the menu that opens on the right side, click (I) button to display the local network settings.
    3. Now, press lease renewal At the bottom of the settings pane to reset your device’s IP address. Restart your iPhone or iPad to complete this procedure.
  7. Set the VPN DNS address manually

This should not be necessary in most cases, and you will need to connect to your VPN to find out exactly which DNS address you want to use. Additionally, always ask your VPN if they think this is necessary before proceeding.

When you have a DNS address, head to Settings > WIFI and click on (I) next to your WiFi network. Next, tap DNS Configuration, Determine booklet Then press add server To enter the DNS address provided by your VPN.

VPN disconnects when switching from WiFi to LTE

When traveling from one place to another, you will likely encounter VPN disconnection. This can happen when navigating on 4G or switching from a WiFi hotspot to 4G mobile data. This can cause the VPN to get stuck in an endless loop of trying to reconnect. To fix this problem:

  1. head for Settings > cellular on your iPhone and turn off the switch next to cellular data.
  2. Now restart it and try to reconnect to your VPN.

How to test a VPN on iPhone

If you are having issues with the VPN on your iPhone, it is always a good idea to test your VPN to make sure that it is working as it should. The most important things you need to check are IP leaks, DNS leaks, and Web RTC leaks.

VPN Leak Test

If there is a VPN leak, it does not provide privacy.

  • An IP leak will allow the websites you visit to know where you are.
  • DNS leaks allow your ISP to track the websites you visit.
  • WebRTC leaks reveal your location for the services you visit.

All three of these leaks are a huge problem, and if your VPN has them, it is necessary to either fix it or sign up for a different VPN.

To help you out, we have created a comprehensive VPN leak tool designed to check all these types of leaks. Tech buffs don’t have to worry, as it’s easy to use and requires you to have no prior experience using dropouts. As a result, you can head straight to our tool to see if your VPN is working as it should.
