My internet connection stops when I use the VPN service

👨‍💻

In our IP Address Guide, we have written a lot of articles about VPN services. For a small percentage, there is a problem that occurs while they are trying to connect to the VPN provider; Their internet connection has stopped working. In other words, after connecting to any VPN server nothing happens at all, and they cannot open any website or do any other online activity.

This is a well known issue in the VPN community, and the main issue is that some Internet Service Providers (ISPs) will not allow you to use a VPN, which means that they block certain websites and content from their users. This is a problem that can be easily bypassed, and all you have to do is change the DNS servers you are using. As long as you use your ISP’s DNS servers, they may block certain content from you, but if you change to other ISPs, you won’t suffer from such groups anymore. The easiest DNS service that you can use for free is Google DNS, but if you don’t want to log your activity, choose another service.

Google DNS: 8.8.4.4 + 8.8.8.8 (fastest option)
ComodoDNS: 156,154.70.22 + 156,154.71.22

If you are using IPv6, the following DNS servers can be used.

Google DNS IPv6: 2001:4860:4860::8888 and/or 2001:4860:4860::8844

What do you do with this DNS information?

If your internet connection stops after connecting to the VPN service, you will probably need to change your DNS servers, from the automatic DNS provided by your ISP, to one of the servers mentioned here earlier. Here we will explain in a few words how you can change your DNS servers.

Change your DNS provider in Windows 8

  • Open Network Connections
  • Right click on your WiFi connection and select Properties
  • Select TCP/IP Version 4 and click Properties
  • Copy and paste the DNS servers of the service you prefer into the fields of DNS servers
  • You should now be browsing with the new DNS servers and your VPN should work (if it doesn’t work, restart your computer and try again)

Change DNS in previous Windows versions

  • Go to Control Panel and select “View network status and tasks”
  • Tap Network and Sharing Center followed by Change adapter settings
  • Select your network adapter (WiFi) and press Properties
  • Select Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4) and select Properties
  • Select “Use the following DNS services” and copy one of the solutions listed

Change DNS on Mac OS X

  • Choose System & Network Preferences
  • Choose the connection in use (either Ethernet or WiFi) and click Advanced
  • Select DNS and add DNS server information
  • Click Apply and you are ready to go!

Change DNS Servers in Ubuntu

  • Click System, Preferences, Network Connections
  • Select a wired (Ethernet) or wireless connection depending on what you’re using.
  • Click Edit and select either IPv4 or IPv6 options
  • If the option is Automatic (DHCP), change it to Automatic (DHCP) addresses only. Then go ahead and add the required information to the DNS servers.
  • Click Apply and you are ready to go!

Check if the new DNS settings are working

If you have done that and want to check if it works, this can be done easily. Visit DNSLeakTest.com and take the test. If you are using Google DNS, you will be presented with a screen giving you something like this.

I hope your VPN connection is now working and this information helped you! If you have comments or questions, feel free to write a comment and I will do my best to help!
