Best Vienna Christmas Market 2021

Christmas markets in Vienna 2021

  • Use the list below to find your way around the main markets, which begin opening from mid-November.
  • What’s a Christmas market?
  • Ad: The dictionary definition is simply a collection of wooden stalls during the weeks leading up to December 24th (and often beyond), with a mix of stands selling traditional Christmas foods, decorations, art and crafts, handmade toys, honey and other delicacies, candy, jewellery, and so on.
  • Though they’re worth visiting just for the atmosphere, the markets also make for excellent shopping.
  • The main Christmas markets I’ve not listed every Christmas market in the city, but these are perhaps the more popular and/or central ones… Christkindlmarkt The biggest and most famous Christmas market, located in front of the Rathaus city hall.
  • (More information) The adjacent park has plenty of Advent surprises, too.
  • Perhaps the biggest pull is the gorgeous location: in front of the Upper Belvedere palace and next to a small lake, offering a glorious photo opportunity at dusk.
  • The market forms a grand circle of stalls in the forecourt of Schönbrunn Palace, with its giant Christmas tree and imperial splendour.
  • (More information) The stalls here always seem very high quality, so a fine place to pick up gifts and those little bits and pieces that make life a better place even if you don’t really need them.
  • Not a regular haunt for tourists, but quite popular with locals because it has a nice central area with food and drink stalls and plenty of bar tables.
  • (More information) I have a soft spot for this one, because Am Hof is the historical centre of Vienna where the first Duke of Austria set up his court.
  • (More information) The Freyung market has an authentic feel, thanks to the smaller size and, particularly, the mix of historical buildings that surround it: medieval churches, Baroque townhouses, and 18th-century apothecaries.
  • (More information) The market feels particularly magical and atmospheric after dusk.
  • It’s a little “alternative” and features many arts and craft stalls.
  • The organisers have strict rules about who can set up a stall here, ensuring diversity, quality, and authenticity.
  • Still a bit of a local secret.
  • (More information) Definitely consider the Karlsplatz market, if you’re looking for unusual or unique items to take back home with you.
  • We always make sure to pop in here to pick up a few smaller gifts for people.
  • The Biedermeier surrounds do make for a unique ambience.
  • A remarkably atmospheric, though very small, market in the main courtyard of the stables of the Spanish Riding School.

Which Christmas market should I visit in Vienna?

  • First, the good news: none of the main Christmas markets are going to let you down.
  • See also: How to make the most of your Christmas market visit [NB: The Christmas markets were allowed to start this year, but they will not open during the current lockdown.
  • (The gateway to Schönbrunn Christmas market) Vienna’s full of historical buildings, so you have to be quite unlucky not to have impressive views and surrounds.
  • You’ll have to walk a long way to find a Christmas market that doesn’t sell decorations of one kind or another.
  • Schönbrunn is excellent, with many stalls dedicated to quality handmade decorations using a variety of materials.
  • The Freyung makes an excellent choice, too, as do the larger markets on the Rathausplatz and Maria-Theresien-Platz.
  • (Ceramic decorations at the Christmas market on Karlsplatz) Again, you can find unique gifts at pretty much any market.
  • So the market has a justified reputation for fine, original (and often a little unusual) handmade items Similar quality criteria apply to the small boulevard of artist booths at the Am Hof market I was very impressed with the Schönbrunn market last time, too – lots of tremendous arts and crafts Got young kids?
  • Local families often gravitate to the Altes AKH, because of the rides and live animals that traditionally appear, plus the adjoining playground.
  • (Incidentally, if you do have children with you, then you might like a few general tips for visiting Vienna with children.)
  • (The central Christmas market on Stephansplatz) Public transport in Vienna offers easy access to all of the markets, but the Altes AKH, Belvedere, Wintermarkt, Spittelberg and Schönbrunn locations do mean travelling a little outside the city centre.
  • If you’re in the very centre, pop up to the Am Hof, Michaelerplatz or Freyung markets.
  • They’re not far from Stephansplatz (the central square in front of Stephansdom cathedral) and relatively small, so you can get around them quickly.
  • Don’t like crowds?
  • But, actually, you can avoid the crowds simply by going a little earlier in the day, as many markets open mid-morning.
  • (Look for benches in the illuminated park adjoining the Christkindlmarkt) First off, avoid the crowds (see above).
  • But if you need to be able to sit down, it gets a little trickier – the markets are generally standing only.
  • The park surrounding the main Christkindlmarkt has benches to sit on and munch your toffee apples.
  • Don’t worry Finally, let me again stress that the quality of the main markets ranges from good to excellent – you really can’t make a terrible mistake.
  • Whichever ones you do visit, be prepared to enjoy the experience.
