When are the Christmas markets open in Vienna?

  • You’re wrapped up warm all ready to splash out on strawberries that foolishly fell into some chocolate.

  • The list below shows when selected main and central Christmas markets in Vienna planned to open according to their websites.
  • November 12th: Spittelberg, Stephansplatz, Am Hof, Genussmarkt bei der Oper, Altes AKH, and the Christkindlmarkt am Rathausplatz November 17th: Weihnachtsdorf on Maria-Theresien-Platz November 19th: Karlsplatz and Belvedere markets November 20th: Freyung, Wintermarkt am Riesenradplatz, and Schönbrunn Christmas markets All these markets also planned to stay open until at least December 23rd.
  • For example: Rathausplatz (until December 26th) Wintermarkt am Riesenradplatz (until January 9th, 2022) The Schönbrunn market (until December 26th) Stephansplatz (until December 26th) Belvedere (until December 26th) Weihnachtsdorf on Maria-Theresien-Platz (until December 26th) Genussmarkt bei der Oper (until December 31st) Actual opening dates depend on how long the national lockdown continues and what each market decides to do with the rest of the holiday season time available to it (assuming we open up before Christmas).

Christmas markets: Vienna is this beautiful at Christmastime

  • From mid-November until Christmas, Vienna’s most beautiful squares are once again transformed into magical Christmas markets.
  • The aroma of Christmas baking, hot punch and toasted almonds wafts through the air.
  • The Old City and shopping streets are decorated with festive lights that spread the Christmas cheer in Vienna.
  • The 150 sales booths at the traditional Christmas Market offer Christmas gifts, Christmas tree decorations, handicrafts, culinary treats, confectionery and warming drinks.
  • A special attraction for couples in love is the tree of hearts.
  • The Children’s World offers a carousel, a ferris wheel, a crib path, and wonderful light installations in the park.
  • Please note that due to official COVID-19 measures, the information below may change at short notice.
  • At the current time, the consumption of food and drinks is only permitted according to the 2G rule for people who are vaccinated or have recovered from Covid (in German: Geimpfte und Genesene).
  • The romantic Christmas Village on the University Campus is also a popular meeting point during the run-up to Christmas, especially for students.

Get ready for the Christmas markets in Vienna

  • From mid-November until Christmas you can warm up with mulled wine and shop some last-minute gifts at Vienna’s beautiful Christmas markets It’s the most wonderful time of the year, sang Andy Williams, and Vienna has got the hop on most of Central Europe with some of the best Christmas markets in the world.
  • The most famous one is the Wiener Christkindlmarkt in Rathausplatz, where tourists and Viennese alike stroll, peruse and shop.

  • On top of dozens of stalls offering artisan Christmas decoration, mulled wine, punch, chestnuts and other snacks, you can do ice curling and warm yourself up at spacious Alpine log cabin Josefinenalm.
  • Compared to other Vienna Christmas markets it also scores high on live music.
  • If Schönbrunn Palace is on your sightseeing list and you love advent concerts, visit in the afternoon on weekdays, as the live music and gospels start at 6.00 pm.

Christmas Markets Prepare to Open amid Rising Covid-19 Cases

  • Austria’s famed Christmas markets are preparing to open their doors for the first time in two years, with strict rules in place amid rising Covid-19 cases in the Alpine country.
  • Neighbouring Germany, meanwhile, is cancelling many of its markets as new Covid infections also rise to record levels.
  • Christmas markets in Austria will open from November 12, beginning with the Viennese Dream Christmas Market in front of the capital’s town hall and followed by others such as Christmas Village Belvedere Palace and the Christmas Market at Schönbrunn Palace.
  • All visitors will be required to show either proof of vaccination or recovery from Covid-19.
  • Austria this week moved to tighten up its Covid-19 measures amid rising case numbers, with negative tests no longer sufficient to access restaurants, bars and hotels.
  • Cancellations Germany is also tightening controls around its Christmas markets, with many planning to require visitors to be double vaccinated or recovered from Covid.
  • Some, like Nuremberg’s Christkindl Market, are tweaking their normal programme, replacing its usual traditional opening ceremony with an online one on November 26.
  • Others, such as Berlin’s Charlottenburg Palace Christmas market, have been cancelled altogether.
  • Political decision-makers once again failed to put in place clear, realistic rules ahead of time, Deutsche Welle quoted market operator Tommy Erbe as saying.
