Best VPN Add-ons for Firefox

Best VPN Add-ons for Firefox

👨‍💻

Firefox users have access to a selection of VPN add-ons for their browser which they can install from the official Mozilla add-ons repository.

Whenever a VPN connection is established, it will be used as an entry point to the Internet. The websites and services that users connect to will reveal the IP address of the VPN server and not the local server.

This is great for a number of purposes. Since you are connecting to a server in a specific location, you can access the restricted contents of that website.

US vpn server allows you to access the restricted contents of USA users even if you are in another country.

Security is also improved because your connection to a VPN is usually encrypted so that others listening for the traffic don’t see the clear text data stream.

NoticeableYou are strongly advised to read the Privacy Policy and Terms of Use carefully before installing any Firefox extensions.

VPN Add-ons for Firefox

Firefox web browser users, just like Chrome users, have access to several add-ons that give them VPN-like functionality in a web browser.

The main attraction of these solutions is that they are easy to set up and use. If you sign up for the VPN service manually instead, it may be required to create a new network connection on your system to take advantage of it. With add-ons, you may need to create an account but that’s about it.

requirements

Only add-ons that meet the following requirements are included in the list.

  • The add-on should be available on the Firefox Add-ons website.
  • The add-on must be compatible with Firefox Stable.
  • A free copy must be provided.
  • It may not inject advertising or manipulate traffic or the browser in other – suspicious – ways.

Hola Unblocker

The browser extension is no longer available on the Mozilla Firefox Add-ons website but only directly on the company’s website. It’s unclear why it’s not available, but it may have something to do with how the service works.

Your use of Hola Free VPN Proxy is free in exchange for the secure use of some of your device’s resources (WiFi and very limited cellular data), and only when you are not using your device.

The extension adds an icon to the main Firefox toolbar by default that indicates whether or not a connection has been established.

You can click on the icon to select a server location for the site you’re browsing, and the extension remembers that selection and will establish the same connection the next time you visit that site.

There is also an option to change the server which is useful if the server you are currently connected to does not provide the performance required to access the contents on the website.

Hola Unblocker uses peer connections to support its service. This means that your computer can be used to stream content to other users. The only way to avoid this from happening is to upgrade to a Premium account starting at $3.75 per month if you pay annually in advance.

performance: The performance was excellent. All streaming services I tried worked fluently with no downtime or buffering issues. Access sites like Netflix, Pandora Radio, Hulu, BBC, Amazon.com or NBC.

ProxMate

Proxmate is offered as a free trial extension for the Mozilla Firefox web browser. Users who have it installed can use the service for three days without restrictions but need to sign up for a subscription to continue using it after that trial period.

An annual subscription is available for $17.95 at the time of writing, but there are also options to subscribe for a shorter period or make a one-time payment instead.

The service lists officially supported channels, streaming TV stations and streaming media in particular, on its site that should work well with the service. On the other hand, not all streaming services may work.

While this is certainly a disappointment to users who installed it to access a service that is not working, it still has uses for others. The add-on receives regular updates from its developer. The last update dated back to two months ago at the time the updated version of the top menu was published.

You may want to check the add-on options as you may find a preference listed there that sends anonymous usage data to the developer.

The Firefox add-on works without any user interaction. Just visit the site and if supported, Proxmate will transfer your connection so you can access the contents. Proxmate uses proxies to enable its functionality.

performance: Not all supported services were working at the time of writing. Those that succeeded, for example, Pandora, Crunchyroll and Grooveshark, worked well and without any problems.

ZenMate Security & Privacy VPN

ZenMate is available as a free and somewhat limited browser extension for Firefox (and Chrome too). You can use the extension without signing up for an account but you can join a 7-day trial of the premium version if you want to test out the premium upgrades.

Premium access is available for $59.99 per year. Although this seems pricey at first, it should be noted that customers have access to a full VPN provider and not just a proxy server when they sign up for ZenMate.

The extension displays an icon in the main Firefox toolbar that you use to choose the geolocation you want as an exit node.

Free users are limited to some sites, including the United States and Germany, while other popular sites such as the United Kingdom are not available to users for free. The sites worked fine during the tests but it is necessary to switch between the exit nodes manually each time a different site is required to access the content.

Premium users get more server locations, automatic location switching based on the location accessed, a full desktop VPN client for Windows and Mac, and faster speeds.

performanceExcellent service performance. I didn’t notice any problems while using it, and all of the tested services, Hulu, Pandora, and Crunchyroll, worked fine during the tests.

Hoxx VPN Proxy

Hoxx is provided as a free and paid VPN service; Paid users support free users of the service. Free accounts are limited in terms of traffic, support, and encryption strength and cannot access the premium server locations next door.

You need to create an account before you can start using the Service. Once that is out of the way, you can start using the service by connecting to one of the free server locations.

A good selection of websites are provided. You can connect to servers in the US, UK, Germany, Greece, Australia and other regions. The connection process is fast and works without problems during the tests.

performance: Performance was satisfactory in all locations I tried.

conclusion

Surprisingly, only a handful of add-ons are available to add VPN-like functionality to the Firefox browser. The makers of Zenmate are working on a Firefox add-on to bring their popular service to the web browser but it’s not clear when that will be the case.

Hola Unblocker was the only add-on that worked with all the services. Its main problem is that its latest version is not offered in the official add-ons repository which means that it has not been audited by Mozilla.

As a Firefox user, it might make sense to install a system-wide VPN instead. There are free programs available, but they usually limit the available bandwidth. Tunnelbear for example gets 500MB of free data every month which is enough to watch one or two shows but that’s about it.
