Does a VPN Extension Hide Your Browsing Activity?
/
A VPN app offers more protection than a VPN browser extension, because it can encrypt your traffic outside of the individual browser.
Again, though, it only obfuscates the traffic for external administrators/viewers, while network traffic is happening.
It still doesn’t solve the problem of what an INSIDE admin can see after the fact. An insider can still see your total browsing history.
Some demonic youths have been sharing with me their tales of manipulating school computers lately.
The school network blocked access to certain websites. Therefore, they used a VPN to get around this restriction.
But, let’s say the school network administrator decides to check it the next time they connect to the school network. The school administrator will then be able to see his browsing history, including when he was connected to the VPN.
You can delete your browsing history every time you close your browser and before you disconnect from the VPN. But this is not always straightforward either. You may have local application data and other traces that may also need to be deleted.
These deletion activities are logged.
There are other caveats, too. Many VPN services encrypt the traffic from your router to your ISP’s next router or other network device. There is a small window where some details will be temporarily decrypted, until the ISP can collect the details. There are VPNs that claim to get around this restriction. I do not know who they are.
Security is difficult.
