Abstract

Stanford’s VPN allows you to connect to the Stanford network as if you were on campus, making access to restricted services possible. To connect to a VPN from a Windows PC, you need to install the Cisco AnyConnect VPN client.

Two types of VPN are available:

  • Stanford default (split tunneling). When using a Stanford VPN from home, we generally recommend a Stanford VPN. This routes and encrypts all traffic destined for Stanford sites and systems through the Stanford network as if you were on a campus. All non-Stanford University traffic will travel directly to its destination.
  • Full traffic (unsplit tunnel). This encrypts all Internet traffic from your computer, but may inadvertently prevent you from using resources on your local network, such as a network printer at home. If you are traveling or using wi-fi in an unreliable place like a coffee shop or hotel, you may want to encrypt all of your internet traffic with our full traffic unsplit VPN to provide an extra layer of security.

You can select the type of VPN you want to use each time you connect to Stanford Public VPN.
