Emirates 247 publishes the comments of Saeed Al-Hajri, Director of the Cybercrime Department of Dubai Police. And in response to a question about how law enforcement agencies deal with crimes related to the Internet, when the perpetrators were using VPNs, Al-Hajri replied that βtampering with the Internet is a crime.β
Network tampering is a crime in itself under UAE law. We have a special article just for this. Arabian Business quoted Al-Hajri as saying: “We are not looking at the case from only one angle, we are waiting for the criminal to fail for only one mistake.”
The UAE Telecommunications Regulatory Authority has long insisted that the use of VPNs goes against its policies, but this frank statement underscores how seriously the Gulf state government is taking this issue.
VPN Creative notes that it is unlikely that suo motos (court orders) will be used against an individual for using a VPN, but it will be considered an additional charge being charged against someone caught involved in separate crimes.
The focus on internet-related crimes in the region comes after the UAE’s Telecommunications Regulatory Authority began monitoring social networks for misuse in a crackdown on social media violations, announced at a press conference last week. βWe have started monitoring all social media channels β all websites and profiles are being monitored,β Ghaith Al Mazeina from the Telecommunications Regulatory Authority told 7 Days in Dubai.
