Firefox gets a built-in VPN – here’s how to test it

Mozilla has announced the launch of a VPN within its Firefox web browser, as part of a new beta program.
The first beta version of Test Pilot brings back a built-in VPN, making it easier for users to protect their online activity from prying eyes. The nonprofit Mozilla says a VPN will help protect web users from “hackers lurking within sight of public communications.”
In a blog post on Wednesday, the company wrote: “Firefox Private Network is an extension that provides a secure, encrypted path to the web to protect your connection and personal information anywhere and everywhere you use the Firefox browser.”
The browser extension, available to US desktop users starting today, can be turned on and off and will show when users are protected.
Mozilla says the VPN will provide a secure tunnel to the web while using public Wi-Fi access points. The company also notes that home users may want to switch to a VPN to keep their IP address hidden from ad networks that seek to track their browsing history.

For now, it’s free to use, but Mozilla says user feedback is the key to knowing if it offers a VPN in the main browser and how it should be priced. You will need a Firefox account to be able to use the Firefox Private Network trial on a tour.
“Your feedback will be essential to ensure that we provide a full range of services that address the issues you encounter online with our affordable service solutions,” the company added.
Back in October, it was reported that the organization had partnered with the ProtonVPN service, with a new notification sent when the browser detects an unsecured connection, or in a scenario where a VPN might be preferred for users. It is not clear if this is related to today’s announcement.
