Government Parliamentary Committee: Blocking VPN Services in India

πŸ‘¨β€πŸ’»

Virtual Private Network (VPN) services have been described as a threat to counter cyber threats and other nefarious activities, and the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Home Affairs reportedly wants the Indian government to ban VPN services in the country. According to a report by MediaNama, the commission explained that the reason why VPN services are banned in India is that VPN apps and tools are readily available online and allow β€œcriminals to remain anonymous on the Internet.”
For those unaware, most companies in India use VPN services to secure their networks and digital assets from hackers. Also, VPN tools became more important during the lockdown when employees were forced to work from home with an unsecured home internet connection. While VPN services allow internet users to access content that is banned in the country and also stay somewhat β€œanonymous” online, the benefits of a VPN are enormous for businesses when it comes to securing networks. The committee also suggested “a screening on VPN and dark web use.”
According to a MediaNama report, the commission recommended that VPN services be permanently banned in the country “with the help of ISPs” across India. β€œThe Committee notes with concern the technological challenge posed by VPN and Dark Web services, which can bypass cybersecurity walls and allow criminals to remain anonymous on the Internet. As of now, VPNs can be easily downloaded, as many websites provide such facilities and advertise. Therefore. The committee recommends that the Ministry of Interior coordinate with the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology to identify and permanently block these VPNs with the help of Internet service providers.”
He further suggested that “a coordination mechanism with international agencies should also be developed to ensure that these VPNs are permanently blocked.” The MediaNama report also stated that the commission wanted “the ministry to take initiatives to strengthen tracking and monitoring mechanisms by further improving and developing the latest technologies, to enforce vetting on VPN and Dark use” of the Web. ”
