How to change IP address without VPN

👨‍💻

A virtual private network is the fastest and most reliable way to change your IP address without any security concerns. However, some of you may want to know how to change your IP address without using a VPN – whether it’s because you only need a temporary solution or a VPN subscription isn’t in the budget.

Now, there are several different ways you can take to change your IP without a VPN. Here they are, in no particular order.

1. Use a proxy server to change your IP address

Much like a VPN, a proxy hides your real IP address and assigns you a new one based on the particular server you are connected to. They differ from VPNs in that proxies do not encrypt your data, leaving you vulnerable to data collection, hackers, and other online risks.

Furthermore, proxies usually do not control DNS traffic. This means that your DNS requests are still broadcasting your real IP address to your DNS provider. A good VPN provider usually uses their own DNS servers and incorporates leak protection to prevent this from happening.

Anyway, back to the agents. The only advantage of the proxy is that you do not need to set up anything on your device. This makes it useful if you only want to access a few websites in particular. Below is an example of using the Hide.me proxy service.

Two easy steps.

Follow the instructions on the site. Enter the website you want to access anonymously, choose a site from the dropdown list, and voila.

Now, free agents usually have a limited number of locations. The paid options give you more options, but if you are looking for a vast server network, we really recommend checking out the 10 Best VPNs with the Most Servers instead.

2. Try Tor Browser

Using the Tor browser gives you access to a worldwide network of “nodes” (or “relays”) managed by volunteers. Think of it as using a series of interconnected proxies to connect to the Internet. Now, any online service that you access can only see the IP address of the last node in the chain, keeping your address hidden.

Unfortunately, you cannot control which relays Tor decides to use at any time. Moreover, the string of nodes changes every time you visit a website. However, this process provides a significant degree of online anonymity. If that’s why you want to change your IP address without a VPN, it’s a decent (and free!)

As much as that can be private.

Keep in mind that directing your traffic through many relays will negatively affect your browsing speeds. This makes Tor a poor choice for streaming and other network-intensive activities. However, light browsing is perfectly fine.

3. Change networks

Simply switch to a different network than the one you’re currently using to provide you with a new IP address. For example, switching to mobile data on your smartphone or using public Wi-Fi instead of your home network.

This is clearly not an ideal solution, and using public Wi-Fi can be dangerous in itself. You can use it to get around the unfair IP block in question.

4. Temporarily disconnect the modem

If your ISP uses dynamic IP addresses (DHCP), disconnecting your modem for a few hours will assign your IP to another user on their network. When you reconnect the modem, there is a chance that you will get a new IP address.

We say “chance” because there is no guarantee of success. If you really need to change your IP address without VPN and the above methods are ineffective, you can also ask your ISP to do it themselves.

5. Ask your ISP to change it for you

The majority of ISPs nowadays dynamically assign IP addresses to home users, so the modem method should work in most cases. If not, contact your ISP and explain why you want to change your IP address. You’ll need a good reason for that, (a ban on 4chan probably won’t cut it).

In the end, using a decent VPN (such as ExpressVPN) to change your IP address is still your best bet.
