Firefox and other HTML5-compatible browsers include geolocation services that allow websites to detect your exact location. Your location is then used to facilitate features such as mapping and advertisements for nearby services.

But you may not want to share this information and changing your location on Firefox may be the solution. Although it is not a straightforward process, it is fortunately not impossible. Firefox has different ways of detecting your location, so it’s a good idea to use a combination of methods to bypass detection.

In this article, we will walk you through these methods and how to implement them on your computer and mobile device.

How to change your location in Firefox on a Mac or Windows PC

First, we’ll discuss two ways to trick Firefox into thinking you’re somewhere else. Since it uses a combination of methods to find your exact location, consider applying both.

Use a VPN to change your location

To make your device appear to be in a different location than what a VPN is using on a macOS or Windows PC, do the following:

  1. Sign up with a more VPN like ExpressVPN
  2. On your computer, download the appropriate Windows or macOS VPN software.
  3. Log in with your username and password.
  4. Connect to a VPN server in the location you want, for example, if you want to view a UK streaming service like “BBC iPlayer” from the US, you’ll choose a UK server.

It will now make your IP address appear as if you are in the same server location.

How to change your location in Firefox on iPhone

Here are two ways to trick Firefox into thinking you’re somewhere else. Since it uses a combination of methods to find your exact location, consider using both.

Use a VPN to change your location

To show Firefox that you are in a different location with your VPN settings, you can configure the VPN client on your iPhone. You will first need an account with a secure VPN provider like ExpressVPN, then read below:

  1. From your home screen, select “Settings”.
  2. Click on “General” and then “VPN”.
  3. Select “Add VPN Configuration” and then “Type”.
  4. Choose your VPN type, for example, IPSec, L2TP, etc. If you entered the wrong type, just select “Cancel” in the upper left corner.
  5. Next, add “VPN Settings Information”, for example, server details.
  6. Add your Authenticator Login details.
  7. Once done, click Done.
  8. Under VPN Configurations, use the toggle switch to enable Status.

Use an app to fake your GPS

Consider using an app to impersonate your iPhone. Programs like iTools provide an easy way to do this and work on most versions of iOS and Windows.

Once downloaded, they offer 24 hour service.

  1. Download and install iTools on your computer.
  2. Open it, and connect your iPhone using a USB cable.
  3. Select the “Free Trial” option.
  4. Via the “Toolbox” screen, choose the “Virtual Location” option.
  5. At the top of the map, enter the location you want in the text box, then press Enter.
  6. Once the marker appears on the map, click “Move Here” to move the iPhone to the location you want. You can also click anywhere on the map to move the marker.
  7. When done, exit the “Virtual Location” window and the iTools app.
  8. To make sure your deceptive location appears once you unplug your phone, if the app asks if you’d like to stop the simulation, say “no.”
    • To view your actual IP address again, go to the “Toolbox” screen, choose the “Virtual Location” option and then “Stop Simulation”. Instead, restart your iPhone.

Now check to see if your location has been spoofed using your settings by closing the app and opening another app that requires your location.

Additional questions and answers

Will changing my location with a VPN also change my IP address?

Using a VPN will not change the IP address facing the public, it just hides it from the internet.

For example, if you want to access UK content that is only available to UK IP addresses, the VPN will allow you to connect to a server in the UK and show you are there.

Once you stop using the VPN, the IP address of where you are actually accessing sites on the Internet will be shown.

How does Firefox determine my location?

Firefox determines your location using Google’s location services, your IP address, information about nearby wireless access points, and a random client ID assigned by Google that expires every two weeks.

How can I prevent Firefox from tracking my location?

To prevent Firefox from tracking your location:

1. On the desktop, launch Firefox, then type “about:config” in the URL bar.

2. A warning message will appear regarding the risks involved in changing advanced settings. Click “I accept the risk” if you are happy to proceed.

3. Enter search for setting “geo.enabled”.

4. The value column must be set to true, click on the two-way arrow to set it to false.

Firefox can now no longer access your site.

be a parody

Firefox uses different technologies to check which site you are connected to the Internet from. Since changing your location is discouraged, you will need to jump through many loops to start the process. Using VPN and fake GPS apps help you fake your location and deceive Firefox.

Hiding your location details is useful when access to a location depends on your geographic location to allow you access, or when you prefer not to be described and want more privacy online.

Did you succeed in changing your Firefox location? What techniques did you use? Let us know in the comments section below.
