How to Create a Shortcut for a VPN Connection on Windows 10

-🖥️-

In the era of the pandemic when most of us have to move our business and business online, it is imperative that one uses a VPN to keep online data secure and cover its tracks. In Windows 7 and 8.1, it was nothing more than a one-click task to connect to a VPN directly from the system tray. But this is not the case with Windows 10.

So what can one do to ensure fast access to a VPN without having to downgrade their Windows experience? Here’s everything you need to know to quickly access your VPN connection.

Create a VPN connection shortcut

In Windows 10, you will have to create a VPN connection shortcut yourself or bring back the venerable VPN Fly-out menu in Windows 8.1. Here are all the methods that will help you to create a VPN connection shortcut for fast and efficient access.

#1: Via Network and Sharing Center

First, let’s see how you can add a VPN shortcut from the Network and Sharing Center. To access it, press Win + R. To open the RUN box, type “control panel” and hit Enter.

Click Network and the Internet.

Then click Network and Sharing Center.

Then in the panel on the left, click Change adapter settings.

Now, the Network Connections window will open. Right-click on your VPN connection and click create Shortcut.

A dialog will open asking for permission to add the shortcut on the desktop. Click Yes.

Now, the VPN shortcut will be added to your desktop. Double click on it to start your VPN connection.

#2: Via the Create Shortcut window

Another simpler way to create a VPN shortcut is to do it from the same desktop context menu. To do this, right-click anywhere on the desktop, and select new, then tap abbreviation.

This will open the Create Shortcut window. Now, in the Location field, enter the following and click next one:

C:WindowsSystem32rasphone.exe

Then name your shortcut and tap finish.

Your VPN shortcut will now be placed on your desktop. Just double click to open the VPN connection window.

Click Connection Let’s do it.

For the first time, you will be asked to enter the username and password for your VPN. Enter the same and click Connection.

To end the connection, simply tap Hanged.

#3: Via batch file

You can also create a simple batch file which, when executed, will enable your VPN. You can place it anywhere you want, be it on the taskbar or on the desktop for quick access. To do this, first, open the Notepad file. We recommend doing this on the desktop itself where the file will be saved for quick access.

Right-click on the desktop, and select new, and then text document.

Now copy the script given below and paste it into the notepad file.

@echo off Ipconfig | Find / I “vpnexample” && rasdial vpnexample / disconnect || rasdial vpnexample

Now, make sure to replace every single instance of vpnexample On behalf of your VPN connection. In our example, we use VPNBOOK as the name of our connection. This is what it might look like:

Now, click a file, then select Save as.

From the “Save as type” drop-down list, select all files. Then give the file a title and save it as a file .paddle a file. Then click Memorizes.

The batch file is now created. Double click on it to connect to the VPN.

#4: Via “VPNMyWay”

VPNMyWay is a handy application that allows you to access your VPN with just one click.

Loading: VPNMyWay

Once the .zip file is downloaded, extract the files and double-click the file setup.exe File to install the application.

Follow the onscreen instructions and provide your VPN connection details.

Once the installation is complete, a shortcut to the application will be saved to your desktop. Double click to open it and connect to your VPN.

Alternatively, you can show it in the system tray for easier access. To do this, right-click on the taskbar and click Taskbar settings.

Scroll down to the Notification Area and tap Select the icons that appear on the taskbar.

Now, find VPNMyWay and launch it.

The VPNMyWay icon will now be placed in the taskbar. Click on it once to start your VPN connection; Click it again to disable it.

In Windows 10, the entire process of connecting to the VPN is inefficient and time-consuming. In older Windows 10 versions, when one clicks on the Connect option under VPN, instead of connecting directly to the VPN, a Settings window opens which does not provide the option to connect directly. This increases confusion about something to do with a single click.

Fortunately, the same functionality in Windows 8.1 is a lot faster which is why many tend to turn to Windows 8.1 style VPN menu with a simple trick. This is how to do it:

Press Start, type “regedit,” and click Run as administrator.

Go to the following registry address:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWAREMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionControl PanelSettingsNetwork

Or you can just copy and paste the above into the registry address bar and hit Enter.

Now, double-click replacing.

Change its ‘value data’ from 0 to 2. then press OK.

Now you will have the Windows 8.1 Fly-out WiFi/VPN menu. Just click the WiFi icon in the taskbar…

Then under the Connections section, click on the VPN you want to connect to and click Connection.

Although it’s still 3 clicks total, it’s much easier than some versions of Windows 10 which redirect you to the settings page. It is good to note that in the latest versions of Windows 10, this issue has been resolved and updated. This means that one can simply click on the VPN connection and get the job done. So, a quick Windows update might be all you need to easily connect to a VPN.

These are all the ways you can create and access your VPN connection shortcut in Windows 10. We hope you were able to simplify the task of connecting to your VPN and get rid of those precious seconds that come with those extra clicks.
