How to delete a VPN from your Mac

If you previously set up a VPN on Mac but are no longer using a VPN service, you may want to delete and remove the VPN from macOS. Additionally, you may want to remove the VPN configuration from your Mac that is no longer necessary for a particular purpose, function or organization anymore.

Removing the VPN from your Mac is very simple and if you configure the VPN manually, you will be impressed by how easy it is to delete the VPN especially compared to the more complicated manual setup process.

How to delete a VPN configuration from a Mac

Note that this deletes the VPN configuration profile from your Mac, which is different than simply disconnecting from the VPN.

  1. Go to  Apple menu in the upper left corner of the screen, then choose System Preferences
  2. Choose a network
  3. Select the VPN you want to remove and delete it from your Mac
  4. Click the minus “-” button with VPN selected to delete the VPN from your Mac
  5. Repeat with other VPN configurations to remove if necessary, otherwise close System Preferences as usual

With the VPN gone, you will no longer be able to access the VPN configuration profile or service.

Obviously, once you delete the VPN from your Mac, it will no longer be usable, unless you set it up and configure the VPN again anyway.

Note that some VPN providers use these third-party apps specifically to install and manage VPN configurations, and if that applies to your VPN use, you’ll also want to delete this VPN app or run the included uninstall script or app from the VPN provider. Deleting the VPN app from your Mac’s Applications folder and then removing the VPN profile from Network Preferences should suffice in this scenario.

If you don’t plan to use a VPN at the moment on a Mac, you may want to disable the VPN menu bar option in the VPN section of the Network Preferences panel, otherwise it will remain in the menu bar even if the VPN service is no longer in use or required, or even if it has been deleted profile from your Mac.

If you set up the same VPN for use in iOS and iPadOS, you may also want to delete the VPN from your iPhone or iPad as well, especially if the service is no longer active or required.

If you have another method or method to remove VPN configurations from your Mac, or any particular experience with this, do share it with us in the comments below.
