VPN services are very useful. It allows you to unblock streaming services that are not available in your location so that you can stream content from all over the world on your Apple TV. Unfortunately, you cannot download the VPN service directly to your Apple TV. This means that there are some additional steps that you must take to set up a VPN on your Apple TV.

In this guide, I show you three ways to set up a VPN with your Apple TV, so you can stream content from abroad. This includes using a VPN router, sharing your computer’s Internet connection with your Apple TV, and using Smart DNS.

How to set up a VPN with Apple TV

There are several common ways to use a VPN with your Apple TV. You can use the method that suits you. However, some methods are easier than others. To help you, we will explain this as we go along.

Unfortunately, Apple does not allow you to install any VPN software directly on your Apple TV. This rules out the easiest possible way to use a VPN with Apple TV. Fortunately, at ProPrivacy we’ve explored three ways that allow you to get a VPN that works with your Apple TV.

Use a VPN router

One of the easiest ways to run a VPN with Apple TV is to set up the VPN on a router. Nowadays, many routers are VPN compatible, so you should check your router model to see if it accepts VPN connections. If your router is not ready to connect to a VPN locally, you may need to update the router with DD-WRT yourself. This will only be possible if it is compatible, so you will need to check with the manufacturer.

Loading a VPN on the router is the easiest way to set up your Apple TV to work with a VPN – but it can be more expensive. The simplest way is to buy a Tomato router or DD-WRT router from FlashRouters. This ensures that the VPN router will work right out of its packaging and that you won’t risk cutting off your router while flashing.

Alternatively, many medium to high-end routers feature a built-in VPN client that can be configured to work with most VPN providers manually. If you don’t already have a router like this, you can buy a cheap option that’s easy to set up – like the Vilfo.

This guide is loosely based on what to do. Please find a more specific manual for your router

If you have a little knowledge and aren’t afraid to get stuck, you can flash your current router with DD-WRT or Tomato firmware (as long as it’s compatible). Every router is different, and we recommend that you try to find a directory specific to your device. However, the basic steps are explained below:

  1. Using a laptop or computer, download DD-WRT or Tomato firmware for your router.

Please note that using the wrong file during this process can disable your router.

  2. Make sure your router is turned on and insert the ethernet cable into any available port.
  3. Connect the other end of the Ethernet cable to the laptop or computer where you downloaded the firmware file.
  4. With your chosen device, head to the router’s IP address (usually 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.0.1). You may be asked for your username and password. If you’ve never updated this yourself, it will be the default password – which you can check with your manufacturer.
  5. Go to the admin panel, sometimes located under advanced and choose Development or router upgrade. Alternatively, some routers may have a CFE bootloader that requires you to enter a sequence to take you to the same menu.
  6. click Loading. You may be presented with a warning message. Only continue if you are sure you are following the correct file.
  7. Once the download is complete, restart your router.
  8. Log back into the router and enter your new login credentials, remembering to save things as you go.

It’s important to remember that this process is loosely dependent on what to do when flashing a router and is not a one-size-fits-all guide. The process detailed above simply gives a brief outline of the steps you will need to take.

Connect to a VPN with your Mac

Share a VPN with Apple TV using an Ethernet cable (MacOS)

For this method to work, your Mac computer must be connected to the Internet. MacBook Pros come with two native Ethernet ports, while other models don’t have one. USB-C and Thunderbolt accessories can provide you with additional Ethernet ports.

If you have more than one Ethernet port available to you on your device, you can use the second port to connect to the Internet instead of WiFi if you prefer. Otherwise you will need to connect via WiFi, to leave the single Ethernet port available.

All Apple TV models, including the Apple TV 4K, come with an Ethernet port that you can use to connect directly to your Mac computer to share its Internet connection.

This method is used to connect your Apple TV to the VPN service The built-in macOS VPN client. For this reason, it only works using PPTP, L2TP or IKEv2 VPN protocols. You must be a subscriber to a VPN that has one of these protocols to successfully set up the VPN with your Apple TV.

  1. Sign up for one of our top 5 VPNs for Apple TV and manually configure the original macOS VPN client to use it. Your VPN provider will have a guide to manually setup the VPN on your Mac. Alternatively, you can use our guide here.
  2. Connect to a VPN server in the location you want or want.
  3. Connect your Apple TV to your computer using an Ethernet cable.
  4. On a macOS computer, go to System Preferences > to share, then select Internet sharing.
  5. click Share your call from In the menu that pops up, then choose the internet connection you want to share (this is the VPN connection you just set up).
  6. Decide how you want to share your connection inFor computers that useList. You will be using an Ethernet cable, so select your Ethernet interface. (In the example below we used a MacBook, which is why the Ethernet cable was connected to our USB port with an adapter).
  7. Make sure Internet sharing is turned on by checking the box.

Share a VPN with Apple TV over WiFi (macOS)

This method requires your Mac to be connected to the Internet via an Ethernet cable or a second WiFi adapter (such as a USB dongle). You can then connect to your Mac OS computer from your Apple TV using WiFi and enjoy the VPN connection. Unlike Windows 10, macOS cannot create a WiFi hotspot using a single WiFi adapter, which is why you must connect to the router using Ethernet to use this method.

This method will only work using the original macOS VPN client, which supports PPTP, L2TP, or IKEv2 clients (not OpenVPN).

  1. Sign up for one of our top 5 VPNs for your Apple TV, then manually configure the macOS VPN client to use it. Connect to the VPN server in the location you want.
  2. Connect your Apple TV to your computer using an Ethernet cable. On our macOS computer, head over to System Preferences > to share.
  3. Choose Share your call from: [the VPN connection you just set up manually]
  4. Choose For computers that use and choose WIFI.
  5. Click WiFi Options.
  6. Check the network settings and specify the SSID password for the new hotspot. Click OK when done (in the example below we used a MacBook Air).
  7. his job Internet sharing by selecting its check box.

Connect VPN to Windows PC

Connect a VPN to Apple TV Using an Ethernet Cable (Windows 10)

For this method to work, your computer will usually need to be connected to the Internet via WiFi. If you have two or more Ethernet ports on your computer, you can use the second port to connect to the Internet instead. This will provide better speeds for your computer and Apple TV.

  1. Sign up for one of our 5 VPNs for Apple TV. Now, install the VPN app on your Windows device and connect to the VPN server.
  2. Connect your Apple TV to your computer using an Ethernet cable. Modern laptops rarely have a dedicated Ethernet port, so you may need to purchase a USB-C to Ethernet adapter cable or similar. All Apple TV models, including the Apple TV 4K, feature an Ethernet port that you can use to connect to your Windows PC.
  3. go to Begins > Network and the Internet > condition > Change your network settings > Change adapter options.
  4. Find your VPN connection. If it’s an OpenVPN connection, it may be named after your VPN provider or may use the generic label “TAP-Windows-Adapter VPN”. Right click on it and select Properties.
  5. Click on to share tab and:
check up Allow other network users to connect over this computer’s Internet connection.
    b) in Select your internet connection drop down menu, select Ethernet connection and press OK.
  6. Your Apple TV should now share your Windows VPN connection, but it doesn’t hurt to restart it to be sure.

Share VPN with Apple TV over WiFi (Windows 10)

Windows 10 now has the ability to create a WiFi hotspot. This allows you to share your VPN connection with your Apple TV using a single WiFi adapter (be it a USB dongle, WiFi card, or WiFi chip soldered to your laptop’s motherboard).

  1. For this to work, though, you need a compatible WiFi adapter. Right click Begins -> Command Prompt And type (or copy and paste):
    Show netsh wlan drivers.
  2. Look for the line that says the hosted network is supported:
    a) If yes, then you can continue with these setup instructions.
    b) If it says ‘No’, you can try updating the WiFi drivers, although it might be easier to get a new WiFi dongle. Alternatively, you can use the Ethernet method described above.
  3. go to Begins > Network and the Internet > condition > Change your network settings > Wireless network from the phone. Convert mobile hotspot employment And make a note of its SSID settings (network name and network password).
  4. Turn on your VPN.
  5. go to Begins > Settings > Network and the Internet > condition > Change your network settings > Change adapter options.
Note that you can now see your hotspot connection. It will be called “Local Area Connection*xx”, and it is called “Microsoft Wi-Fi Direct Virtual Adapter”.
  6. Find your VPN connection. If it’s an OpenVPN connection, it may be named after your VPN provider or may use the generic label “TAP-Windows-Adapter VPN”. Right click on it and select Properties.
  7. Click on Sharing tab And:
check up “Allow other network users to connect over this computer’s Internet connection.
    b) inSelect your internet connectionDrop down select your hotspot connection (Local Area Connection * xx”). Leave Allow other network users to control or disable the shared Internet connection and tap OK.
  8. Connect your Apple TV to the Windows hotspot you created via WiFi using the SSID details you registered earlier.

Use VPN’s Smart DNS Service

Some VPN providers offer Smart DNS with every subscription plan. This provides an easy alternative way to make your VPN service work with your Apple TV. To use this method, you will first need to know the required DNS address from your VPN provider. (It will only be able to provide this if it already provides this feature). ExpressVPN, for example, has this excellent add-on.

  1. On your Apple TV, go to Settings > general > Language and Region > Apple TV language. Change the iTunes Store Location to the same country as the DNS server you wish to connect to. In many cases, this will be the US, but it could also be the UK if you want to watch BBC iPlayer.
  2. Now go to Settings > network > WIFI > [name of your Wi-Fi connection] -> a) Change “DNS Configuration” from Automatic to booklet. b) Click on “DNS” and then enter the DNS settings your provider gave you.
  3. Restart your Apple TV, and you should now be able to access US Netflix (or the services in the country you requested).
