FAQ: ProtonVPN on Routers

Q: Will the connection speed slow down if I set up ProtonVPN on my router?

A: It depends on your router’s processing power. If your router can’t handle the extra VPN encryption, then you can see slower speeds.

Q: Will having ProtonVPN on my router protect all my connections?

A: A VPN on your router will protect the connections of all devices connected to the router, but not necessarily the connection between the device and the router. VPN encryption occurs on your router, which means that it only applies to the traffic between your router and your ISP. As long as your router is password protected and you don’t have any unknown devices connected to your network, this shouldn’t be a problem.

Other local network connections, such as the Bluetooth connection between your smartphone and the speaker, will not be protected.

Q: Once I set up the VPN on my router, do I need to do anything else?

A: A router, like any other device, needs to be updated regularly to receive the latest security improvements. If not updated, routers can become incompatible and stop supporting the ProtonVPN service. This can happen if the router is running an old version of OpenVPN (for example, 2.3) or an outdated version of the SSL/TLS networking stack. (These examples are from user problem reports.)

Updating your router will help it stay compatible with our servers. When you choose a router to install ProtonVPN on, you should choose one from a brand that has a proven track record of keeping their firmware updated.
