How to install Windows Server 2008 R2

👨‍💻

Windows Server 2008 R2 is the latest version of the Microsoft Windows Server operating system. Microsoft does its best to make every task as simple as possible, and Server 2008 R2 is a shining example of this goal in action. We’ll take you through the basic installation and show you how easy it is.

Basic installation

After booting from the installation disc, you will get to the Language and Preferences screen. Once you choose these options, you get to the OS selection page. Depending on your license and the purpose of your server, there are a variety of options to choose from. For our purpose today, we will choose a file Enterprise (full install) Version.

We read the Standard End User License Agreement.

Since we are doing a basic installation and not an upgrade, we choose special feature) Selection.

We have a blank disk of 24 GB, so we will install it there. If you want to create a partition from the available drive space or reformat a drive, choose Drive Options (Advanced).

Windows will take some time with the installation, and restart several times.

Once the installation is completed, we are required to change our password before logging in.

Windows requires you to have a strong, seven-character password with at least three of the following four: uppercase letter, lowercase letter, number, or symbol. You’ll need to make sure it’s written somewhere for now, because if you forget it later, you’ll have to reinstall completely.

The initial configuration tasks window pops up as soon as you log in. You can also write Oobe.exe At the command prompt to get here.

One of the first things we want to correct is time, so choose Select timezone. Make sure you set the timezone first, because the date and time will change after that.

Then we want to choose Networking Configuration. The first server installed in the network should be the domain controller, and since it requires a static IP address, we’ll need to setup one now. Double click local connection, and once the information box appears, tap Properties.

Click Internet Protocol version 4 In the Networks box, then tap Properties. Change the radial button to Use the following IP address: Then enter the settings for your specific server and network IP addresses. When done, tap OK to save those settings.

Been completed!

That’s it for a basic installation of Windows Server 2008 R2. We are using VMware, but if you are using any virtualization software to install, this is the point where we advise taking a shot, because we have not yet assigned any roles or functions to this server and it will save time later to just clone a basic install like we just did. From here you can give this server roles such as directory or certificate services, but these topics will be covered in separate articles.
