How to set up a VPN in Windows 10 [November 2020]

It’s easier to use than Linux, and can do more than Chrome OS. It’s been the most popular desktop operating system around the world for decades, and with just how good Windows 10 is, it’s easy to see why.
However, as big as Windows is, that doesn’t mean everyone knows how to use it to its full potential. If you are looking to enhance your security, using a VPN on Windows is a must. No matter who you are or where you are, it is best to use a VPN to help protect your outbound traffic. Microsoft has done a lot to enhance the security of its operating system since launching Windows 10 in 2015, but you still need to keep your actual browsing data safe. Using a VPN makes your internet connection anonymous, and it can also give you the advantage of making Windows 10 faster than before.

Install your VPN with Windows
When it comes to installing a VPN on Windows, the easiest way to do it is to turn to the application itself. Most VPNs in 2020 use their own software that automatically enables VPN connections on Windows. Heres how to do it.
Download the installer
For this method, we use Private Internet Access for our VPN service. However, these steps basically apply to any VPN you want to use today. After choosing the monthly, quarterly or annual subscription option, choose your payment method and make the purchase. Once paid, you will receive an email directing you to download the VPN software installer.
After receiving and opening the email, download the Private Internet Access installer from the link in the email and then proceed to install the VPN software package on your computer.
Head to the Private Internet Access website, where you purchased the VPN software, it will open. The installer will start downloading through your web browser. to choose Save as, if given the option, and save the installer to your desktop. This way, it is easier to locate, access, and start installing your Internet VPN software.
Install VPN
- After the download for Private Internet Access is complete, right-click on it and select it Run as administrator.
- You will see a Command Prompt box pop up on your Windows screen. It will extract and install the required items for the VPN software to work on your Windows 10 device. The installation box will ask for your permission to install Private Internet Access VPN on your Windows 10 PC. Just click File Installations button.

Use the built-in VPN in Windows
If you are looking for absolute privacy, you will have to turn to an external VPN. However, if you’re just looking for a simple VPN to run in the background, you’ll be excited to know that Windows 10 offers one absolutely free. It’s hard to configure on your end, but once you turn it on, you’ll be ready to protect your data, using a PPTP redirect to do so.
Follow these instructions to configure the built-in VPN that comes with Windows 10.
- In the Windows 10 taskbar, click the Windows icon. Then click Settings (Little gear icon).
- When the Windows Settings box appears on the desktop screen, click Network and the Internet.
- Then, in the left panel, click VPN.
- In the VPN window, click Add a VPN connection.
- Choose Windows (built-in) as your VPN provider in the dropdown box.
- For your contact name, enter what you want to call.
- The server name or address is then entered. You will need to know this information, as it pertains to your own server or the VPN server you will be connecting to. You will need to do some research on your own to find a reliable VPN server that will allow you to connect to it.
- Next, choose PPTP (Point-to-Point Tunneling Protocol).
- Choose your username and password as your login information. Then enter your username and password in the text boxes. Make sure to check the box Remember my login information, unless you are using a public computer.
- Finally, click on File Memorizes button at the bottom of VPN Setup. You are now ready to start using it.
The newly set up VPN now appears in the VPN menu. Simply click on it and select the Connect button and you are ready to go.
