How to set up a VPN on Android TV

There are many reasons why you might want to use a VPN on your Android TV box, but it is not available as a stock option as on Android phones or tablets. Fortunately, there are several ways to get around this.

You’ll also need a few things on your Android TV, including the OpenVPN app (which you can get from the Play Store) and Google Chrome (which you’ll need to sideload after downloading from APK Mirror).
With everything installed and ready to go, launch Chrome and sign in to your VPN provider’s website. Since Chrome isn’t designed for an Android TV, things can get a little weird with input, and I’d also recommend using a Bluetooth keyboard for quick text entry work.
You will need to download your own configuration file, which will be in a different location on each VPN site. With StrongVPN, you will find it in the Client Area > Setup Instructions.
If you have the option, download the configuration file for Linux or Mac systems.
Note: If you just installed Chrome, you will need to give it permission to write files to the system.
With the file downloaded, go ahead and head over to OpenVPN. This app is not like that really Designed for use with a non-touch interface, it is not recommended for use with a remote control or controller.
Using your Android TV remote control (or game controller, if available), click on the small square with the down arrow in the upper right corner. This is the import button.
Select the configuration file you downloaded earlier. After loading, go to the check mark in the upper right corner and select it to save the configuration.
To enable your VPN, highlight and click the file you just imported.
It should prompt you to enter your VPN username and password, so go ahead and do it.
Once everything is entered here, click OK. You must authenticate and connect.
From now on, you will need to switch back to the OpenVPN app to connect or disconnect from your VPN. It’s a little out of the way, but it’s better than nothing.
