How to use a VPN to change your IP address

-🖥️-

If you are wondering how to use a VPN to change your IP address, you are probably looking for:

  • Change your virtual location to stream exclusive content from abroad
  • Bypass internet censorship in countries like China, Russia, etc.
  • Hide your physical location for extra privacy
  • Getting around price discrimination (cheaper flights, accommodations, digital goods, etc.)

Whatever your goal, the process of changing your IP with a VPN is fairly simple. This is what you have to do.

1. Sign up for a VPN account

Very simple – you will need to create an account on the provider’s website in order to log into the application later. Check out our list of the best VPNs if you’re not sure which provider is worth your time.

Even if you decide to go with a different provider than the one on our list, the least we can recommend is Stay away from most free VPNs. There are many hidden dangers of free VPNs that may end up costing you more than the single subscription price.

Suffice it to say that they are not worth it. It doesn’t happen when most sub-providers (like ExpressVPN) are able to offer a full refund within 30 days if their service doesn’t satisfy you.

2. Download the VPN app from your provider’s website

Most providers nowadays support a variety of platforms and devices – from Windows to Linux, iOS to Android, and anything else in between.

They really support a huge number of devices.

You can even install a VPN on your router to change the IP address on any of your home devices. Yes, even those that don’t support VPNs by default (eg game consoles and smart TVs). Alternatively, your service provider may offer separate guides and downloads for any of these devices. Here’s what ExpressVPN looks like.

This is just the list!

Whichever system you choose, download the app, follow the setup process, and go to the next step.

3. Turn on the VPN client and log in

When you first complete the VPN setup process, you will need to go through a series of prompts (similar to the one in the image below). Click the options you want to continue.

Easy choices.

For security reasons, we recommend allowing your VPN to run on startup. This way your ISP can’t take advantage of your network habits, and hackers can’t access your data on public Wi-Fi and other unsecured networks.

Then, you will be asked to sign in using your account details, activation code, or email login link, as shown below.

Options!

Proceed to the next step once you are logged in.

4. Select a VPN server from the list of service providers

To change your IP address using a VPN, all you have to do is select a location from your provider’s list of VPN servers. This could be a server in your country if you want a different IP address for privacy reasons and want to get the best possible speeds from your VPN.

Click (or tap) onspecified locationSelect to display a list of recommended sites.everyone LocationsDisplays a list of all available servers from around the world.

Clicking the Select location button brings up the Recommended sites. Click on “All Locations” to view servers grouped by continent.

Double-click (or tap) any of the options To contact the mentioned site.

do it!

Congrats! You should now have an IP address from the country of your choice.

You can click (or click) large power button (“Disconnectto other providers) to disconnect from the VPN server and restore the original IP address at any time.

How to check if your IP address has changed

You can easily check for changes in your IP address using a service like WhatIsMyIPAddress, or simply Search “what’s my IP” on Google (or the search engine of your choice).

If you are connecting to a VPN server from the country you are in, make a note of your IP address before and after connecting to the VPN to confirm the change.
