How to Use ExpressVPN in China: A Guide to Research in 2022

If you are on your way to the Middle Kingdom, then you know that you need a top-notch VPN to bypass the internet censorship imposed by the Chinese government. ExpressVPN is our best VPN, but you still have to make sure it works in China. Fortunately, a VPN is there, and this guide will tell you how to use ExpressVPN in China.

The Great Firewall is one of the worst forms of censorship around the world (although it doesn’t apply to Hong Kong; well, not yet). The internet is tightly censored and anything the Chinese government doesn’t like, such as media websites and critical content, can be blocked.

In addition, you will only be able to access monitored social media apps, such as WeChat and Youku, unless you use a VPN in China.

How to download ExpressVPN in China

Although downloading and installing ExpressVPN is a simple task, China does not make it easy. The ExpressVPN website is blocked in mainland China, so you won’t be able to download the ExpressVPN app while you’re there. Your best bet is to set up a VPN app before you arrive in China.

Simply choose one of ExpressVPN’s plans, enter your email address and choose your payment method.

Next, download and install the ExpressVPN app on your device.

Once the ExpressVPN app is installed, enter the activation code you got in the last step and click Continue. This is.

How to use ExpressVPN in China

First, you should make sure that the VPN protocol is set to the most secure OpenVPN. Click on ExpressVPN’s hamburger menu and select “Preferences”.

Then click on the Protocol tab, select UDP-OpenVPN, and click Change Anyway.

To access blocked content from Beijing or any other part of mainland China, you need to connect to a VPN server outside the country. Click on the three dots. You can then choose one of ExpressVPN’s specific server locations using either the search box or by clicking on All Locations.

Once you have chosen the server, click the Run button. When the VPN app is ready, it will turn green and say “Connected”.

You’ll now be able to access restricted content outside the Great Firewall, like the news or Netflix (read our best VPN for Netflix, as well as our dedicated guide on how to watch Netflix in China). If you are having trouble accessing anything from China, switch your ExpressVPN connection to another VPN server by repeating the above steps.

How to use ExpressVPN in China

  1. Subscribe and download ExpressVPN before arriving in China
  2. Change ExpressVPN Protocol to OpenVPN
  3. Connect to a VPN server outside China
  4. Access the Internet content you want
  5. If you are having trouble accessing anything via VPN, connect to a different server by repeating the above steps

last thoughts

You need to make sure you choose a secure VPN to circumvent the Great Firewall, and ExpressVPN is the best VPN for China (although NordVPN works in China as well). Now that you know how to use ExpressVPN in the Middle Kingdom, just make sure to download a VPN app before you get there.

  • Is ExpressVPN illegal in China?

Your only safe way to get around the internet bans imposed by the Chinese government is to use a VPN in China. Some VPN providers still operate in China, but they are banned – that is, except for government-approved providers, but those are monitored. If you are caught using an unapproved gimmick, you can be fined. ExpressVPN is one of the best VPN services for China, and it will keep you from getting caught.

  • Does ExpressVPN work in China?

It’s a tough job keeping up with the VPN ban in China, but ExpressVPN still works. When their servers are blocked, they usually get back up and running in China again quickly. There are no ExpressVPN servers in the country (not including Hong Kong), so the VPN service does not need to comply with data regulation laws, which conflict with ExpressVPN’s no-logs policy.

  • How secure is ExpressVPN?

With ExpressVPN, you are covered with some of the best security available. The VPN uses 256-bit AES encryption, and has DNS leak protection, as well as IPv6 protection. ExpressVPN also includes an automatic kill switch to protect in case the VPN fails. You can read more in our ExpressVPN review.
