I spent a few weeks testing, researching, and learning about ExpressVPN, and I can safely say that it is the best VPN on the market.

ExpressVPN Features
ExpressVPN has the following security features:
- 256-bit AES encryption. Comprehensive military-grade encryption to make your internet traffic 100% unreadable.
- No-logs policy. ExpressVPN does not log your personal information, internet traffic, or files you download. ExpressVPN has been audited by a third party to verify the no-logs policy.
- Lock switch (network lock). This feature stops your internet traffic if you are disconnected from the VPN server, protecting you from accidental data leaks.
One of the things I really like about ExpressVPN is that its servers run on RAM, which means nothing is stored on a physical hard drive. All data on the server is wiped clean every time the server is restarted.
I also like that ExpressVPN provides its own DNS on every server, and it encrypts all DNS requests automatically, which means that DNS queries will not be visible to third parties and server response times will be faster.
In addition to preventing DNS leaks, ExpressVPN also offers built-in protection against WebRTC and IPv6 leaks. ExpressVPN allows you to completely disable WebRTC in desktop apps and browser extensions for Chrome, Firefox, and Edge. ExpressVPN offers 4 protocols – OpenVPN (TCP and UDP), IKEv2, L2TP/IPSec and Lightway. Lightway is a proprietary protocol of ExpressVPN, and it has much better speeds than the other three protocols (ExpressVPN also claims that Lightways is more secure). While I recommend most people use Lightway whenever possible, it’s important to keep in mind that this protocol isn’t available for iOS yet. Also, IKEv2 and L2TP/IPSec are not available on Android.
ExpressVPN also offers Total Forward Secrecy, which changes the encryption keys used to encrypt and decrypt your internet traffic every 15 minutes or when you disconnect from the VPN. This ensures the security of your sensitive data even if the newly generated encryption key is compromised (the hacker will only be able to see the traffic encrypted with the compromised encryption key, but no past or future traffic will be compromised).
Besides these standard security features, ExpressVPN also offers some additional security features.

ExpressVPN’s Split Tunneling Tool Is Really Good It is available on Android, Windows and macOS. While most premium VPNs offer split tunneling for Windows and/or Android, there aren’t many competitors that support this feature on macOS – in fact, ExpressVPN is one of the rare VPNs that offers split tunneling for Mac users. . This feature is available for macOS 10.15 or earlier, and ExpressVPN is currently developing support for macOS 11.
I tested the ExpressVPN split on several occasions, downloading torrents, making VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol) calls, and accessing geo-blocked websites in my country – and the feature worked smoothly every time. Additionally, when I routed my traffic through an ExpressVPN server and surfed the Internet on my local network, I was able to get faster download speeds than when my traffic was routed through the VPN.
ExpressVPN’s split-tunneling worked well for me, and I also found it easy to use on my Samsung Galaxy, Windows PC, and MacBook Pro. The only minor drawback is that ExpressVPN does not allow you to exclude certain websites or IP addresses from the VPN tunnel – for example, competitors like ProtonVPN allow you to exclude web browsers, apps, and IP addresses.
Overall, ExpressVPN’s split tunneling feature is a great way to send traffic through the VPN and your local network simultaneously. I’d like to see ExpressVPN’s split tunneling tool offer more customization options, but including or excluding specific apps is good enough for most users. In addition, this feature works really well, is very easy to use, and it is also available for Mac.

Built-in speed test
ExpressVPN’s built-in speed test feature allows you to quickly test ExpressVPN’s servers to find the fastest servers for your location. This tool ranks servers by latency (how long it takes your device to connect to the VPN server) and download speed—it’s available on Windows and macOS.
ExpressVPN’s speed test was very accurate in my test. I tested ExpressVPN’s best recommended server against the lowest rated servers, and the best recommended server was always the fastest.
I really like this feature because it allows you to choose the fastest server every time you use the VPN. Additionally, most competitors don’t offer in-app speed tests like these (the closest being CyberGhost VPN, which lets you see the load on each server).
Overall, the ExpressVPN Speed Test feature is useful. The tests are easy to run, you don’t need to use a third party to get the speed test results, it’s accurate, and not something other VPN services offer.

Tor traffic support
All ExpressVPN servers support traffic from The Onion Router (Tor). You don’t need to turn on any option – you can start using Tor Browser after connecting to ExpressVPN’s server.
Lots of VPNs that support Tor over VPN offer dedicated servers for Tor traffic, including ProtonVPN, so it’s good to see that ExpressVPN lets you use Tor on any server you want.
Also, I really like that ExpressVPN has a .onion version of its official website, which makes it a lot easier to stay anonymous while purchasing the subscription. This also allows users in countries with heavy internet censorship to purchase ExpressVPN.
But keep in mind that using a VPN with Tor can lead to particularly slow speeds – the Tor network is really slow because it encrypts your traffic multiple times, and adding another layer of encryption over the VPN makes the connection slower. When I tested this feature, sites took longer to load (more than 10-15 seconds), and experienced 70-80% slowdowns compared to normal internet speed.
But if you use .onion sites regularly and want to avoid leaks while using the Tor network, I definitely recommend ExpressVPN. However, you’ll still need to download and use Tor Browser to access the Tor network – competitors like ProtonVPN allow you to browse .onion domains in browsers like Opera or Chrome, which may be more convenient for some users.

Privacy and Security at ExpressVPN
ExpressVPN has a strict no-logs policy – It does not log your IP address, the sites you visit, or the files you download. ExpressVPN’s privacy policy clearly states that it only records your email address (for communication purposes), payment information (to issue refunds), and VPN apps you download. ExpressVPN also logs communications with the support team (to improve the user experience) and data usage (to monitor users who abuse the service).
I really like that ExpressVPN has gone through several independent audits to verify the no-logs policy. in 2018, Cybersecurity firm Cure53’s review of the ExpressVPN Chrome extension found that ExpressVPN complied with major security and privacy standards. A year later, auditing firm PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC) confirmed ExpressVPN’s compliance with its privacy policy and that user data is erased every time the server is restarted (using its TrustedServer technology).
ExpressVPN is headquartered in the British Virgin Islands (BVI). This is a good thing because the BVI does not have mandatory data retention laws and only the BVI High Court can order ExpressVPN to share user data – but since ExpressVPN does not log data, there will be no information to hand! Also, the BVI is not part of the Eyes 5/9/14 alliances (a group of countries that share intelligence data).
Overall, ExpressVPN has an independently verified transparent no-logs policy, and is headquartered in a privacy-friendly country that is not part of the 5/9/14 Eyes alliances.
