The app you “install” to use the VPN service is a local token. If this code is hostile, then you’re at a loss: once you run malicious code on your own device, this malicious code can somehow hijack your entire device.
theoretically, if You run the code as a non-privileged user, And Your operating system ensures perfect isolation against non-privileged local users, and then You may recover from running malicious code without completely reformatting your hard drive. However, this is not a reasonable basis, because no practical operating system has managed to enforce such isolation. All operating systems contain local privilege escalation vulnerabilities. Moreover, the VPN must connect itself in the OS network subsystem, which will require some non-trivial privileges, so the point is moot.
assuming That TunnelBear is not malicious, VPN, being a VPN, only protects data in transit, between your device and the VPN exit point, on TunnelBear servers. These servers, by building, see all your unencrypted data. A VPN (when done correctly) is like an armored steel tube between your device and the exit point; It does absolutely nothing for traffic past that exit point.
If you want to protect your data from inspection by VPN administrators, you should use end-to-end security with whatever device you’re trying to connect to, which basically means SSL (i.e. HTTPS). This begs the question of why you would want a VPN in the first place, of course.
