Is using a VPN legal in Nigeria? (What you need to know) » Naija News 247

👨‍💻

The Attorney General of the Federation (AGF) and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami, have directed the immediate prosecution of the perpetrators of the federal government’s ban on Twitter operations in Nigeria.

This came in a statement issued by the Office of the Attorney General of the Union and the Minister of Justice on Saturday, 5 June.

The ministry’s spokesperson, Omar Jibrilo Guandu, said the AGF had directed the DPPF to swing into immediate action and begin to prosecute violators of the ban.

My opinion:

Mind you, I am not a lawyer, but I believe that the Attorney General of the Federation (AGF) and the Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami, have no right to order the arrest and trial of any Nigerian for any reason.

As you know, Malami is one of the dumbest AGF Nigeria ever. He talks like he didn’t finish elementary school, so I’m not surprised. Are you? lol

the perpetrators? how? What crime have we committed and under what section of the law? Was VPN illegal in Nigeria before now? It is completely legal to use a VPN in Nigeria!

Actually let’s talk about the legality and illegality of VPN.

Question: Are VPNs legal?

Answer: Yes! As a matter of fact, VPNs were originally used to provide a secure network for large businesses and organizations. However, VPNs can also be used for illegal or unrecommended activities and for this reason, some countries like Russia and China have declared VPNs illegal. However, other countries still allow its use.

What everyone should know is that while a VPN is legal, illegal activity with them is not allowed. If you are doing something illegal via VPN, you are bound to be prosecuted under the laws of your country. A VPN can help hide your identity, but selling drugs, copyright material, spreading viruses, etc., is still illegal and can obviously get you in trouble.

Yes, FG has suspended Twitter operations in Nigeria indefinitely, but it has never been stated that anyone who violates or exceeds the restrictions, will be arrested and prosecuted.

The federal government should judicially ban VPNs in Nigeria according to any section of the 1999 constitution. Second, they should also state that whoever violates the federal government’s ban on Twitter operations in Nigeria will be punished according to any section of the 1999 constitution. Until then, not They have the right to arrest and prosecute anyone.

China, Iraq, the United Arab Emirates, Turkey, Belarus, Oman, Iran, Russia and a few other countries have both legally and officially banned VPN. The Nigerian government should do the same. You cannot wake up and start quoting laws that do not exist out of ignorance or hatred.

In fact, we violated Twitter’s policy here. Accessing your Twitter account using a VPN, is against their terms of use. But they were overlooked by the situation on the ground. They knew we had no choice. We owe it to FG not to apologize and we have committed no crime.

AGF Malami has no right to arrest and prosecute Nigerians for using Twitter or VPN
You may or may not agree.
