5 Best Synology VPNs to Use in 2021

Based on our tests, these are the best Synology VPNs to use in 2021:

Since 2009, ExpressVPN has set the standard for what is expected of a premium VPN service – and its 4.7 star rating on Trustpilot proves it to be! Located in the British Virgin Islands, ExpressVPN is the ideal provider for customers who want to access data securely via their Synology NAS device. The VPN offers strong OpenVPN encryption, and an OpenVPN connection can be set up directly on your Synology device. Unfortunately, ExpressVPN doesn’t have port forwarding, so you’ll need to access your Synology device remotely through the QuickConnect setup (instead of using an IP address). However, they do provide a helpful guide to help you set up a VPN on Synology

QuickConnect will allow you to access your Synology via a dynamic access address (a URL previously set using Synology’s QuickConnect feature). The nice thing about ExpressVPN, is that it is a versatile VPN that allows you to get more privacy and security on all your devices, including Synology. To keep you safe at home and in public, ExpressVPN uses AES-256 encryption – the same standard used by the US military.

On top of that, ExpressVPN can be used to easily bypass geo-restrictions – which means you can access torrents with complete privacy. It’s an excellent VPN that offers fast speeds, 24/7 live chat support, and a 30-day money-back guarantee to try it out for yourself.

By integrating popular VPN protocols – PPTP, OpenVPN, and L2TP/IPSec – the VPN server provides options for creating and managing VPN services tailored to your individual needs. To choose any of the following types of VPN server and to enable VPN services on your Synology NAS, install and run VPN server.

  • Enabling the VPN service affects the network performance of the system.
  • Only DSM users who belong to Officials The group can install and setup a VPN server.

PPTP

PPTP (Point-to-Point Tunneling Protocol) is a popular VPN solution that is supported by most clients (including Windows, Mac, Linux, and mobile devices). For more information on PPTP, see here.

To enable the PPTP VPN server:

  1. to open VPN server then go to Settings > PPTP on the left panel.
  2. put a mark Activate PPTP VPN Server.
  3. Specify the virtual IP address of the VPN server in a file dynamic IP address fields. See About dynamic IP address below for more information.
  4. Designation Maximum contact number To limit the number of simultaneous VPN connections.
  5. Designation Maximum number of connections with the same account To limit the number of simultaneous VPN connections with the same account.
  6. Choose any of the following from Authentication VPN Client Authentication Dropdown:
    • door: VPN clients passwords will not be encrypted during authentication.
    • MS-CHAP v2.0: VPN clients passwords will be encrypted during authentication using Microsoft CHAP v2.
  7. if you choose MS-CHAP v2.0 To authenticate above, choose any of the following from encryption VPN connection encryption dropdown:
    • No MPPE: The VPN connection will not be protected by the Microsoft Point-to-Point Encryption (MPPE) mechanism.
    • MPPE optional: If the client has enabled the MPPE mechanism, the VPN connection with the MPPE mechanism will be protected. Otherwise, the VPN connection will not be protected.
    • Require MPPE: The VPN connection will be protected by the MPPE mechanism.
  8. Designation MTU (Maximum Transmission Unit) Limits the packet size of data transmitted through the VPN.
  9. put a mark Use manual DNS And specify the DNS server IP address to push DNS to PPTP clients. If this option is disabled, the DNS server used by Synology NAS will be pushed to the clients.
  10. click Progressing for the changes to take effect.

Noticeable:

  • When connecting to a VPN, the authentication and encryption settings of the VPN clients must be identical to the settings specified on the VPN server, otherwise the clients will not be able to connect successfully.
  • To be compatible with most PPTP clients using Windows, Mac OS, iOS, and Android, the default MTU is set to 1400. For more complex network environments, a smaller MTU may be required. Try reducing the MTU size if you keep getting a timeout error or you experience unstable connections.
  • Please check the port forwarding and firewall settings on your Synology NAS and router to make sure that TCP port 1723 is open.
  • PPTP VPN service is built into some routers, and port 1723 may be busy. To ensure that the VPN server is working properly, you may need to disable the built-in PPTP VPN service through the router management interface for the PPTP of the VPN server to work. In addition, some older routers block the GRE (IP 47 protocol), which causes the VPN connection to fail. It is recommended to use a router that supports VPN traffic connections.

    2. Relevant routing rules are added manually from the client side.

To export the configuration file:
