Setting up a VPN for Windows Server 2016

πŸ‘¨β€πŸ’»

I’ve previously setup on several occasions VPN access on Windows Server 2012 R2, but I haven’t tested it on newly released Windows Server 2016.

The role of remote access is a VPN that protects your network connection or remote connection from one side to the other and protects both sides from attacks or data sniffing as the VPN protocol uses a tunnel within a standard data connection.

Noticeable: You will need to open TCP port 1723 on your firewall as this port is used to access the VPN.

Also, I’d like to point out that this may not be a guide to enterprise deployments as you will probably be using a VPN for hardware from your router or using direct access that relies on IPv6 technologies to establish connections with clients.

How to install VPN on Windows Server 2016 – Steps:

Install the remote access role via a file Add Roles and Features Wizard. to open server manager Either locally on the server that will host the remote access role or on a computer that has Server Manager configured to connect to the server to which you are publishing the role.

then select Add Roles and Features Wizard From Menu management. Click Next before the page begins if it is displayed. Then select Role-Based or Feature-Based Installation and click Next.

On the Server Role Selection page, scroll down and select the check box remote access. Then click Next.

You will need to click two more times to access the remote access role services, where you have to choose Direct access and VPN.

Accept installation of subcomponents, such as IIS… Accept all default settings.

It will take some time to finish installing all components and subcomponents.

Then click the Open Getting Started Wizard link to open the configuration wizard.

A new window will appear. You will need to click on Deploy VPN Only which will configure the VPN using the Routing and Remote Access console.

After clicking on this part, the Routing and Remote Access console will open. Right click on the server name and click Configure and enable Routing and Remote Access.

Note: You can also play this console via Control Panel > System and Security > Administrative Tools.

Click Next and select custom configuration.

So far, it was very simple. Let’s go and finish the configuration. All we have to do on the next screen is to select the check box VPN access Because we just want this feature to be active.

You will then only have one page showing a summary of your choices. Confirm by clicking the Finish button. After a few seconds, you will see a popup asking you to start the Routing and Remote Access service. Click start service button.

Next step – Allow some users to connect to the newly configured VPN server

Typically this type of micro-environment can be used for system administrators requesting access to a remotely installed server, or for a small group of users within an organization. Depending on the architecture, the server can be part of a Microsoft domain and have central user management through Active Directory (AD) or it can be a standalone server outside of any domain.

For the sake of simplicity, we are considering this case, but in both cases, you will need to configure at least one user to access through the VPN and we will show you how to do it.

So if you are in a Workgroup environment you can use the Computer Management Console (MMC), and if you are in a domain environment this can be done in the user properties of the Active Directory user.

Usually, a DHCP server is located inside a corporate environment. If not, you will have to add a static address set.

You can find the settings in the properties of your VPN server, you can click on the IPv4 tab and enable and configure Static address pool. Make sure to use the same subnet as your server’s static address.

Well, this is about.

From the customer’s point of view. The client must configure a VPN connection from the client end. Therefore, depending on the operating system the customer is using, the setup may vary.

But basically, you have to set up a new VPN connection.

and then

This will create a new connection within the network connection window there.

To finally get this screen after connecting and entering your password.

Conclusion: Windows Server VPN

This is the simplest way to do it. However, it does involve opening TCP port 1723 on the firewall. Note that there is another solution for remote access, but it usually involves installing third-party tools on the server side, as well as on the client side.

You may want to avoid installing these tools on the company’s servers and stick to the traditional built-in VPN from Microsoft, for remote administration.

You may also be constrained by your budget as these tools usually cost money when used in an enterprise environment on server systems.
