According to a story published by Emirates 24/7, using Virtual Private Networks (VPNs) in the UAE to bypass content filters and “internet manipulation” is illegal in the UAE.
There are many VPN services that allow users to bypass filters set by the authority and ISPs. While these services may be used for nefarious purposes, some users in the country and region use them to access services such as VOIP and multimedia content that may be restricted to certain countries – such as Netflix or Spotify.
The story also adds that while Dubai Police may not initiate action her own – Which means on its own – the use of such a service will lead to their own additional penalties in cases of people who have committed illegal activity.
