Using a VPN is punishable by law: Dubai Police – Business – Technology

A senior Dubai Police official has confirmed that the use of Virtual Private Networks (VPNs) is illegal and can be punished by UAE law.
While the UAE Telecommunications Regulatory Authority has always maintained that using a VPN goes against its policies, the police have now again warned that legal action under Law No. 9 can be taken against VPN users.
VPN services in UAE are used by some individuals to access VoIP services and access some blocked websites.
Saeed Al Hajri, Director of the Cybercrime Department of Dubai Police, said that “tampering with the Internet is a crime.” He was responding to a question about how police could track criminals involved in online extortion and other internet-related crimes, if they did so using a VPN service.
While suo moto action may not be initiated against anyone using a VPN service, additional charges can be brought against someone caught in an illegal act and when it is discovered that they also used a VPN.
Dubai Police said that once the suspect is identified, he will be under constant surveillance, even if it means a three or four-year-old operation. “We’ve even looked at complaints that are three to four years old,” he said.
