What does my ISP see when I’m connected to a VPN?

When you connect to a NordVPN server, your Internet Service Provider (ISP) can see that you’re connected to an IP address owned by the VPN service – in this case, NordVPN. It may also know the time of your connection and the port your VPN protocol is using. In addition, the provider will see how much traffic is going to and from your device.

Apart from that, the only other important thing that the service provider can detect is the fact that the actual online traffic is hidden from them. This means it He loses access to the following information:

  • The sites you visit
  • The specific web pages you browse and the time you spend there
  • Browsing and search history
  • Files you download or upload to unencrypted websites
  • Information you type on unencrypted websites

Why is my ISP still seeing some information?

That’s because your service provider connects you to the sites you want to visit. You send a data packet to it, which acts as a request, and your ISP sends it to the correct destination. When you connect to a VPN, you tell it to send this request to the VPN server.

But from that point on, the VPN server takes over the packet, and the ISP will never know its final destination.

To summarize, ISP see this information When using a VPN:

  • VPN server IP address
  • timestamp when calling
  • The port your VPN protocol is using
  • The amount of data you send or receive
  • Encrypted and unreadable data travels between you and the VPN server

So use a VPN to prevent ISP tracking and protect your privacy

Tip: The security of your VPN connection depends on your account password as well. Don’t forget to use a strong password on your account, it will help you avoid credential stuffing attacks and will keep your connections safe and uninterrupted.

Since creating and remembering strong and secure passwords is not an easy task, we recommend downloading the free password manager – NordPass. It generates secure passwords for you and stores them securely, allowing you to avoid wasting time resetting your password in the future.
