Who Should Worry About Proposed VPN Ban in India

  • If India bans VPNs, it will join the league of China, North Korea, Russia and the United Arab Emirates in doing so.
  • Popular VPN services, such as NordVPN, ExpressVPN, and IPVanish, give users anonymity on the Internet and allow them to access blocked websites. In India, VPNs were furious when the popular mobile game PUBG was banned last year.
  • These are also used by companies to allow secure access to company servers and data by remote employees who may be using public or unsecured internet connections.

The Parliamentary Standing Committee on Home Affairs of India has urged the government to ban Virtual Private Networks (VPNs) in India. Just like Belarus, China, Iraq, North Korea, Oman, Russia and the United Arab Emirates.

So who is likely to influence?

Popular VPN services, such as NordVPN, ExpressVPN, and IPVanish, give users anonymity on the Internet and allow them to access blocked websites. In India, VPNs were furious when the popular mobile game PUBG was banned last year.

These are widely used to watch anything from Netflix content in other countries to hidden websites on the dark web as well as porn websites like Pornhub, Xvideos and Youporn, which are also banned in India.

In fact, India is said to have the highest adoption rate of VPNs according to data from Atlas VPN.

VPNs offer more privacy than even a secure Wi-Fi hotspot. These are also used by companies to allow their employees to work remotely to log into the company network from anywhere and keep company data secure through the encrypted network.

So will VPN bans hurt remote work?

“We believe that the ban is not primarily limited to VPN tunnels for large corporations and business entities, but rather targets VPN companies that help Indian citizens bypass the current internet ban in India to conduct cybercrime activities. We also believe that the government will allow companies that comply with Indian data laws regulations” Achara said.

Is it possible to block a VPN?

Yes, it is possible to block VPNs. The government will issue a mandate to ISPs to block commonly used VPN protocols and ports used by these VPN services. Additionally, lower-tech ISPs will still have loose ends of an effective blanket blocking of VPN services,” said Darshit Ashara, associate vice president of the research team at CloudSEK.

“Due to the current technological world we live in, a common technique called ‘Deep Packet Inspection’ can be implemented to accomplish this. Besides IP address or port blocking techniques can also be used. We noticed earlier that Reliance Jio uses SNI scan-based filtering to block websites Achara added.

Why is this VPN ban suggested?

In its report to the Rajya Sabha, the commission highlighted the dangers of VPNs that can “bypass cybersecurity walls and allow criminals to remain anonymous on the Internet”. As VPNs encrypt your internet traffic, they give you the protection of your virtual identity. Your online activities are hidden from the websites you visit and from your Internet service providers as well. But the main purpose of VPNs is to help prevent third parties from tracking your online activities and stealing data.

In addition to working with the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) and Internet Service Providers (ISPs) to identify and block VPNs, the commission proposed developing a coordination mechanism with international agencies to ensure that VPNs are permanently blocked. He also urged the government to improve tracking and monitoring systems to monitor VPN and dark web usage as well. The dark web consists of hidden internet sites that can only be accessed through a specialized web browser. These websites are used to keep internet activity anonymous and private. Like VPNs, the dark web can be used for both legal and illegal purposes.

Will the ban be guaranteed?

Achara added that the task of ensuring that the ban is enforced will be more important than banning VPNs in the country. Similar to how people can find ways to bypass bans on apps like PUBG Mobile, the same can be done for VPNs as well. “If high-end users are not able to evade the ban, then here we are talking about a technically strong or less knowledgeable (cybercriminal) person,” Achara said.
